Burberry Shoes

British

Burberry, a luxury British fashion house with origins in battlefield gear and outfitting real-life explorers, is universally renowned for its vintage trench coats, jackets, footwear and handbags. The brand has undergone several transformations since its inception in the 19th century.

When the 21-year-old apprentice draper Thomas Burberry (1835–1926) opened a small clothing outfitter in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1856, he catered to the needs of the local population, focusing on weatherproof clothing designed for outdoor activities like hunting, riding and fishing.

Building on his success, Burberry researched more fabrics that would be suitable for these country pursuits. In 1888, he patented gabardine, a durable, breathable fabric that was ready for any British weather. The material was groundbreaking for rainwear, which previously had been bulky and heavy. Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen wore it on his 1893 North Pole expedition and Burberry later outfitted Sir Ernest Shackleton on his Antarctic expeditions. These high-profile demonstrations of its design for extreme conditions fueled Burberry’s growth as a trusted brand.

The Tielocken coat — a forerunner to the trench coat — was patented in 1912, featuring just a button at the collar and a single strap. Higher-ranking British officers during World War I donned trench coats designed by the likes of Burberry, Aquascutum and other firms.

The design of Burberry’s classic trench demonstrated a consideration of the demand for both weather protection and function on the battlefield, with every element having its purpose, whether it was the epaulets for an officer’s rank or the gun flap at the breast. When the now-familiar check — a plaid check with black, white and red stripes on a background of beige — was added as a lining during the 1920s, a fashion icon was born. Scarves and other items featuring the pattern rendered the Burberry plaid an instantly recognizable hallmark of the house around the globe.

The brand continued to gain popularity throughout the 20th century, but by the 1990s, it was in dire need of a refresh. By the time Christopher Bailey was named design director at Burberry in 2001, the check was so ubiquitous through rampant knockoffs that it had become a reference for kitsch rather than quality.

Drawing on its heritage of craftsmanship with a new streetwear edge, Bailey helped rebuild Burberry’s relevance as a reputable fashion brand. Key to this reimagining was developing an understanding of how to democratically market high-end luxury fashion. Milestones in this regard materialized in 2010, when Burberry became the first brand to livestream a fashion show (and did so using 3D technology), and in 2020, when the house brought its London Fashion Week presentation to Twitch, a popular American livestreaming service. The international visibility brought with it renewed interest in the brand, which eventually revived its tartan after dropping it from many of its clothes, including in a 2018 collaboration with Russian designer Gosha Rubchinskiy that swathed shirts, dresses, coats and bags in the check.

Although tastes have changed, the signature trench coats that date back to Burberry’s beginnings remain at the brand’s core, with new fabrics and fits continuing to adapt this British style classic to contemporary trends.

They stand as one of the defining pieces of the collection, embodying Mugler’s sculptural aesthetic and the collaboration’s archival inspiration. In Mugler’s late 1970s - early 1980s collections, the house collaborated exclusively with Maud Frizon, one of the most influential shoe designers of the period. Many pieces from the H&M capsule were derived from the archives and re-invented for this modern reissue, making these boots a particularly significant collectible. Although officially part of the men’s collection, these boots are a unisex classic statement piece and integrate seamlessly into any wardrobe. Constructed in supple black leather with glossy patent contrast, they feature a pointed toe, offset block heel, and a side zipper closure with silver-toned hardware and a Mugler-branded pull tab. DETAILS COLOUR: Black leather & patent leather Upper: 100% Leather Lining: 100% Leather Sole: 100% Polyurethane Heel Height: 4.5 cm Closure: Side zip with Mugler-branded pull Marked Size: US 8.5 / EU 41 / UK 7.5 Approx. Fit: True to size MEASUREMENTS: Heel Height: 4.5 cm / 1.77 in Top of Heel to Ankle Shaft (front): 22.7 cm / 8.94 in Heel Width: 10.7 cm / 4.21 in Widest Sole Width: 11.5 cm / 4.53 in Weight of Single Boot: 853 g / 1.88 lb PROVENANCE & STYLE NOTES Released in May 2023, the Mugler x H&M collaboration was a global phenomenon and remains one of the most celebrated designer x high street partnerships of the decade. Nearly every piece sold out within 20 minutes, and this pair, as the only footwear produced for the collection, holds a special place in the collaboration’s history. Drawing inspiration from archival Mugler designs and Maud Frizon’s influential footwear collaborations, these boots represent Mugler’s futuristic silhouette reimagined for the contemporary era under Casey Cadwallader. While not runway-documented to a Mugler couture collection, this piece is entirely consistent with Cadwallader’s modern Mugler aesthetic, defined by architectural lines, futuristic silhouettes, and unisex appeal. Released only in limited numbers as part of the short-lived collaboration, these boots are now increasingly difficult to source in this brand new condition. Follow our storefront for new listings updated weekly. MANFRED THIERRY MUGLER (21 December 1948 – 23 January 2022) A French fashion designer, creative director and creative adviser of Mugler. In the 1970s, Mugler launched his eponymous fashion house; and quickly rose to prominence in the following decades for his avant-garde architectural, hyperfeminine and theatrical approach to haute couture. He was one of the first designers to champion diversity in his runway shows, which often tackled racism and ageism, and incorporated non-traditional models such as drag queens, pornstars, and transgender women. In 2002, he retired from the brand, and returned in 2013 as the creative adviser. At the beginning of his career he designed signature looks for Michael Jackson, Madonna, Grace Jones, Duran Duran, Viktor Lazlo, David Bowie and Diana Ross; most notably Demi Moore's dress from the 1993 movie Indecent Proposal, which was once coined "the most famous dress of the 1990s". In 1992, he directed and designed the outfits for George Michael's "Too Funky" music video; also that year he launched the perfume Angel, which became one of the best-selling perfumes of the 20th century. Mugler's fall 1995 haute couture collection, marking the 20th anniversary of his brand, was staged at the Cirque d’Hiver venue in Paris; and has been referred to as the "Woodstock of Fashion", for having over 300 designed looks, an elaborate set design, dozens of high-profile supermodels and a performance from James Brown. He also designed costumes for Beyoncé's I Am... World Tour, and created a one-off design for Kim Kardashian to wear to the 2019 Met Gala. At the age of 24, Mugler moved to Paris. He began designing clothes for Gudule, a Parisian boutique. At 26, he began to design for a variety of large ready-to-wear fashion houses in Paris, Milan, London and Barcelona. In 1971, he began designing clothes for Karim, already showing the broad-shouldered, 1940s-derived looks he would become famous for in later years. In 1972, his full-skirted raincoat became a hit. In 1973, Mugler created his first personal collection called "Café de Paris". The style of the collection was both sophisticated and urban. Melka Tréanton, a powerful fashion editor, helped to launch his career. In 1976, she asked him to show his work in Tokyo for an event organized by Shiseido. The 1977 showing of his spring 1978 line displayed a punk influence. In 1978, he opened his first Paris boutique at the Place des Victoires in the 1er Arrondissement and rapidly gained attention as among the most extreme of the Fall 1978 broad-shoulder brigade of designers, with a penchant for mid-20th-century sci-fi themes and exaggerated 1940s-50s-style glamour marked by sharply constructed tailoring At the same time, Mugler launched a fashion collection for men. He would continue into the following decade with his 1940s-style shoulders on 1950s-tailored suits amid retrograde Wagnerian showmanship. During the 1980s and 1990s Mugler became an internationally recognized designer, often grouped with his friends Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaïa but known especially for his shapely suits, and his collections garnered much commercial success. Except for a couple of sedate salon presentations in 1986 and 1987 (when he also reduced his shoulder padding), his fashion shows were extravagant affairs held in arena-like environments and the collections associated with them had themes, sci-fi and cavewoman themes in the late seventies, celestial themes later, a 60s theme one season, an Africa theme another, a vampire-devil theme the next, and an aquatic theme the next, with ongoing creative motifs that would span multiple collections, like his late-eighties inclusion of garments and accessories modelled after the tailfins and chrome trim of 1950s U.S. automobiles most recognisably 1959 Cadillacs At the request of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, he completed his first haute couture collection in 1992. He designed the dresses of Viktor Lazlo for hosting Eurovision 1987. He created the black dress worn by Demi Moore in the 1993 movie Indecent Proposal. Mugler also directed short films, advertising films and video clips. He regularly designed costumes for musical comedies, concerts, operas, and the theatre (including Macbeth for the Comédie Française). He worked with Robert Altman and George Michael (he directed the video for Michael's "Too Funky" in 1992). He also directed the first advertising film for one of his fragrances, Alien. Mugler left fashion in 2002. In 2002, Mugler collaborated with the Cirque du Soleil. He directed "Extravaganza", one of the scenes of Zumanity, and created all of the costumes and the identity of the characters in the show. In 2008, the Mugler brand launched Thierry Mugler Beauty, a high-end line of cosmetics. In 2009, Mugler worked as artistic advisor to singer Beyoncé. He created the costumes for her "I Am... World Tour". In September 2010, Nicola Formichetti was announced to be the Creative Director of the Thierry Mugler brand. He changed the brand name to MUGLER, removing the first name, and in January 2011, he launched the revival of the brand's menswear collection in collaboration with Romain Kremer. In December 2013, House of Mugler announced David Koma as the artistic director. In 2016, Mugler created and directed the music video and staging for San Marino's Eurovision Song Contest entry "I Didn't Know" performed by Turkish singer Serhat. Despite retiring from his brand in 2003, he made the exception to design under his name "House of Mugler" for the Met Gala in 2019 and for Kim Kardashian. Getting his inspiration from Sophia Loren in the film Boy on a Dolphin, Mugler envisioned a wet California girl; hence the creation of the "wet couture dress". The American designer Casey Cadwallader was named Mugler's new creative director in December 2017. During the period of the pandemic, Mugler skipped runways for video shows that were co-created with DIS magazine's spin-off, Torso Solutions. Megan Thee Stallion, Chloe Sevigny, Bella Hadid, and Eartheater were featured in the Mugler Spring 2022 Ready-to-Wear Collection video which ended with a brief homage to the late Mugler. The homage was dancing feature by prima ballerina Maria Kochetkova and vogueing superstar Barbie Swaee. After an almost three-year hiatus from runway shows, Mugler returned to an in-person show in Paris FW 2023. The runway featured models Adut Akech, Paloma Elsesser...

Questions About Burberry Shoes
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
Burberry's changed to Burberry in 1999. Interestingly, the British luxury fashion house actually returned to its original name with the move. When Thomas Burberry founded the company in 1856, he chose the name Burberry, but it was modified to Burberry's during the early 20th century. Find a diverse assortment of Burberry apparel and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
Yes, there is a difference between Burberry and Burberry Brit. Burberry is the overall name of the British luxury fashion house. On the other hand, Burberry Brit is a single brand produced by Burberry. It consists of clothing and accessories with a more casual spirit, geared toward a younger demographic. Find a diverse assortment of Burberry apparel and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 13, 2024
The difference between Burberry Brit and Burberry Prorsum comes down to style and price. Burberry Brit is the casual apparel collection offered by the luxury British fashion house Burberry. The company's high fashion, dressier label is Burberry Prorsum. Generally, Burberry Prorsum pieces sell at higher prices than those that bear the Burberry Brit name. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Burberry apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Since its inception in 1856, Burberry has become one of the world's most premiere fashion houses. Known for the classic trench coats with a plaid lining, Burberry pieces are made with high quality materials and attention to detail.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 16, 2024
In Burberry, Prorsum is the name of a label. Launched in 1999, Burberry Prorsum is the British luxury fashion house's high-end line of men's and women's apparel and accessories. Burberry discontinued the label in 2015 and began producing the collection under the Burberry name, but in 2023, it was revived. The word “prorsum” is Latin and means “absolutely” or “ultimately.” In 1901, Burberry added the word to its logo, and the name of the Burberry Prorsum line is a reference to that. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of Burberry apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
Yes, Burberry is considered luxury. Since its founding in 1856 as a high-end outdoor apparel brand, Burberry has maintained a stellar reputation for its weather-ready fabrics, such as gabardine, which founder Thomas Burberry patented in 1888. Many of the brand's pieces, including its iconic trench coats and handbags, are handmade by skilled artisans as well. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of Burberry apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 27, 2024
The difference between Burberry and Mulberry is that the two luxury fashion brands are different British companies. Thomas Burberry founded Burberry in 1856, and his label is well-known for its trench coats and apparel and accessories featuring the classic Burberry check plaid print. Roger Saul established Mulberry in 1917. Today, the brand is most famous for its iconic handbags, such as the Bayswater, the Alexa and the Amberley. Explore a wide variety of Burberry and Mulberry pieces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024
The TB in Burberry means Thomas Burberry. In 1856, at the age of 21, he founded the luxury fashion house of Burberry by opening his own store in Basingstoke, England. As a tribute to the founder, Burberry incorporates the monogram of his initials into many of its designs. On 1stDibs, explore a variety of Burberry apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
There are three styles of Burberry trench coats that have remained popular over the years: the Chelsea, the Kensington and the Westminster. On 1stDibs, you can find a collection of authentic Burberry trench coats from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The original Burberry trench coat was the Tielocken coat. Thomas Burberry patented the men's coat in 1912. Since then, the British luxury fashion house has become known for producing coats in its style for both men and women. You'll find a variety of Burberry trench coats on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
How you wear a Burberry silk scarf is largely a matter of personal preference. You can wrap it around your neck and knot it on one side or center the knot and tie a bow for a romantic look. Alternatively, you can wear it as a headband or even a bracelet. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Burberry scarves.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
When checking the authenticity of your Burberry silk scarf, first look at the stitching. If it is uneven and patchy, it is likely a fake. Also, if a brand label is included, it should be crisp and clear, with no fraying. You can shop expertly vetted Burberry designs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

To tell if a Burberry Brit coat is real, check the inside lining for the material and care instructions tag. By comparing your tag to images of labels from genuine coats found on trusted online resources, you may spot inconsistencies that indicate your piece is a replica. Most Burberry coats will also have a 13-digit serial number printed on this tag, and you can cross-reference yours to images published online as another step in the authentication process. Finally, look closely at the buttons. Authentic Burberry Brit coats will usually have the Burberry name in two places on their buttons, while many counterfeits will have plain buttons or ones emblazoned with single wordmarks. If you need assistance with authenticating your coat, seek the opinion of a certified appraiser or other knowledgeable expert. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Burberry outerwear.
