By Gustav Melcher
Located in Meinisberg, CH
Gustav Melcher (German, 1898-?) Segelschiffe vor Venedig - Sailing ships off Venice • India ink, water colour wash • Visible image ca. 11.5 x 18 cm • Glased Frame ca. 20 x 25 cm • Verso various inscriptions • Signed lower right Gustav Melcher was a German painter and a pioneer in film, film criticism and film theory and created this clever little picture of the skyline of Venice with various vessels. Going by the various inscriptions an the backing paper, this drawing was made in 1918 when Gustav was twenty years old and passed on three years later to Gertrud Melcher on the 1. 2. 1921. I have no reasons to doubt this information. The small drawing is still in its unopened frame, so maybe there is more information to be discovered , however this will be the privilege of the next owner. The picture also has retained its original antique frame – note that it has lost over the years various sections of the gesso decoration. The very precisely executed drawing is most enjoyable to look at and doing so, remember you are looking through the eyes of a young man, who saw this foreign sea cape over a century ago. Thank you for your interest and please note, that I offer free worldwide shipping on all my items. Gustav Melcher began his studies at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie under Peter Janssen and Eduard von Gebhardt. Originaly he was interested in figurative and portrait painting, but after time he decided to pursue the depiction of land- and marinescapes. Durin his studies the young artist undertook trips to visit England, Scotland, Belgium and France and he joined the artist society Malkasten. It was in those days he would hold speeches to his colleges about this new invention called ‘Kintopp’ – Melcher was a great advocate of the moving pictures...

French 19th Century Oil on Canvas Blue and White Music Allegory Cherub Painting
Located in Firenze, IT
This romantic French 19th century allegoric oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...

She has produced artwork in almost all areas of applied graphics. posters, commemorative cards, designed album covers, postcards, advertising graphics, slide films, animation and cartoons. Her drawings were published in Dörmögő Dömötör and Kisdobos among others as well as in children's magazines. An entire generation of children grew up with her book illustrations, reading the fairy tales of Wilhelm Hauff or Hans Christian Andersen. Her story books and drawings are known well beyond our borders. She illustrated nearly 80 storybooks. She is a contemporary of Maurice Sendak and William Steig. Her work is of the same genre as the iconic Polish Cyrk poster artists. In her original fine art graphics grotesque and bitter elements often prevail, her figures are playfully ironic. Her drawings are made in a variety of ways, from pencil drawings to watercolor painting to collage techniques, from decorative spot effects to lace-like line drawings. She is no stranger to a kind of Art Nouveau influence, but it is always individual. It was never beautiful, but over the years its color scheme changed, thus confirming the lines of József Somogyi quoted earlier. She had several individual exhibitions, and for more than 10 years as a member of the Papp-Gábor group, her works could be seen in Dorottya Street.
