Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC – 43 BC) was a Roman statesman, scholar, and the greatest orator of the late Roman Republic. A master of Latin prose, his vast body of work profoundly influenced Western thought and the course of the Renaissance, which Petrarch famously initiated by rediscovering Cicero's letters.
His literary legacy includes seminal philosophical treatises such as De Republica, De Legibus, and De Officiis (On Duties), which adapted Greek philosophy for a Roman audience. He is equally renowned for his brilliant speeches, including the In Catilinam (Against Catiline) and In Verrem orations, as well as his extensive correspondence, Epistulae ad Atticum, which provides a vivid, detailed record of Roman history and politics.
