The style of the artist Airo is called "retrofuturism" or "Russian cosmism." This is a popular and growing trend among artists and collectors around the world. Sergei Airo was born in 1960 in the city of Novorossiysk (Krasnodar region) in the artist's family. In 1991, Sergei showed interest in the so-called "primitivism". I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting. This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me. The subjects of my paintings are usually based on the patterns and textures of nature and human interaction with nature. I have found subjects to paint in remote wilderness areas of the world, local parking lots, and my own backyard. The painting is based on the sketch I made for a friend who in the early 90's wrote an account of his years as an occultist in Berkely, CA during the 1970's and 80's. He apprenticed himself to a charismatic magician. The latter believed himself to be both the returned Christ and the magical child (incarnated spell) of the infamous Alestair Crowley. This magician took on the form of Mickey Mouse in order to carry out his ministry, the ultimate goal of which was to be crowned at the Vatican.
