Daniel Sherrin Art

British, 1868-1940

Daniel Sherrin was an early 19th century English artist born in 1868 in Brentwood to the artist John Sherrin. He was a pupil of the excellent landscape artist B.W. Leader. Sherrin was primarily a landscape artist who is very well known for painting country scenes in Suffolk, Norfolk, Surrey and Hampshire.

Sherrin’s output was often used as book illustrations, one of his works In the Highlands featured in the book Highways And Byways From A Motor Car, by Thomas D Murphey. Sherrin contributed to the war effort during WWI by designing recruitment posters and was also commissioned to paint Sandringham by King George V. The painting still hangs in Buckingham Palace.

Richard Ball Spencer British, (1812-1897) The Perthshire off Ailsa Craig Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 22.25 inches x 36.25 inches Size including frame: 31 inches x 45 inches This painting by Richard Ball Spencer is of the Perthshire, a three-masted barque sailing off Ailsa Craig. The Perthshire was built in Dundee in 1874 and was owned by Thomas Law of 123 Hope Street, Glasgow. The red ensign flying on the mizzenmast indicates it was a British merchant or passenger ship. The owner may well have commissioned the painting to commemorate its maiden voyage. Ailsa Craig, pictured to the far left, is a small uninhabited island off the west mainland of Scotland in the outer Firth of Clyde. The island is made up of volcanic rock which was quarried in the past and is now only used as a source of microgranite to make curling stones. The island is known by a number of different names including A' Chreag (the rock) and Creag Alasdair (Alasdair's rock). It was also sometimes referred to in the past as ‘Paddy’s Milestone’ as it marked the halfway of the sea journey Belfast to Glasgow made by Irish Emigrants seeking work. Richard Ball Spencer was born in London’s East End on 11 November, 1812 to John and Elizabeth Ball. His father was a grocer and the family lived at 106 York Road in Mile End. Both Richard and his brother Thomas were given their mother’s maiden name as their middle names. By 1841, he had established himself as a marine painter specialising in ship portraits and was influenced by artists such as Joseph Heard (1799-1859), William John Huggins (1781-1845) and Robert Salmon (c1775-1845). He spent his time travelling to trading ports around the British coast as well as the nearby London docks of Brunswick Wharf and the Isle of...

This early 20th-century autumnal oil painting by British artist Daniel Sherrin (1869-1940) depicts a rugged heath landscape under the glow of a setting sun. Sherrin was an accomplished painter of landscapes and maritime subjects. He spent the majority of his life in Seasalter, near Whitstable in Kent, where he became a local celebrity of repute. His father, John Sherrin RI RWS (1819-1896), was a painter of delicate still lifes in watercolour and trained by the distinguished William Henry Hunt (1790-1864). However, it’s unlikely that he provided any early tuition for his son as he actively dissuaded the young lad from entering the profession. As such, Sherrin was instead apprenticed to Peter Moore...

Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentford , Essex in 1868. The son of John Sherrin R.I.- the well-known flower and still life painter. There is no record of him receiving a formal training, but it is probable that as with many of his contemporaries he studied with his father. Most of Daniel Sherrin’s work is in the style of several popular artists of the time. He painted rural landscapes after the style of Benjamin W. Leader; marines after very similar to those of Thomas Somerscales...
