About the Item

This lovely large Victorian landscape oil painting is by noted British artist Daniel Sherrin. Painted circa 1900 the painting is entitled Close of Day. The composition details a landscape view from a hill into the distance. In the foreground a figure comes into view, carrying firewood or faggots on their back. To the left are majestic pines and then one's eye travels over the drop of the land and the tops of trees to the countryside stretching out into the twilight distance. A really peaceful, calming painting that one could look upon for years and never get tired of looking at. Signed lower left. Provenance. Bears copied inscription on reverse. West Sussex estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 24 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a fine 19th century giltwood and gesso frame, 37 inches by 31 inches framed. Daniel Sherrin (1868-1942) was an early 19th English Artist born in 1868 in Brentwood to the artist John Sherrin. Daniel Sherrin was a pupil of the excellent landscape artist B.W Leader. He was primarily a landscape artist who is very well known for painting country scenes in Suffolk, Norfolk, Surrey and Hampshire. His output was often used as book illustrations, one of his works “In the Highlands” featured in the book “Highways and byways from a motor car, by Thomas D Murphey. Daniel Sherrin contributed to the war effort during the 1st World War by designing recruitment posters, and was also commissioned to paint Sandringham by King George V. The painting still hangs in Buckingham Palace. His works are either signed D Sherrin or occasionally L Richards or Horace Gallon.
