Daniel Wohlgemuth Still-life Paintings

German, 1876-1967

Daniel Wohlgemuththe son of Johannes Wohlgemuth of Albisheim an der Pfrim and Katharina (Krehbiel) Wohlgemuth of Weierhof. He was born at Albisheim on 17 April 1876, but reared by his uncle Johannes Krehbiel of Weierhof, studied art at Frankfurt and Strasbourg, and finally at the Art Academy in Munich under Franz von Stuck. His travels in Italy, Palestine and Russia contributed to his development. Daniel’s artistic work was done chiefly in his native Rhenish Hesse and the Palatinate (for a time living at Weierhof, later at Gundersheim near Worms), but also for a time in Munich and Berlin. His chief medium was black and white drawing, including charcoal (often lithographs) but also watercolors and oils. Daniel’s themes were largely landscapes, often of his native land, with a fine series on Palestine. He also did many portraits, including an excellent one of Albert Schweitzer. His works are found in all the leading German galleries, such as Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Dresden, Berlin, Homburg and Leipzig. During his lifetime, Daniel received acclaim by leading art critics.

Lilac flowers at the door, 1901 uplifting floral still life large oil on canvas
Located in Norwich, GB
Here is a painting that will lift you - one feels happy every time one looks at it. It is such a lovely, unusual twist to the theme of the floral still life: here we have flowers, not in a vase, but attached to a wooden front door. I wonder if the artist did this with actual flowers, perhaps for a sweetheart, and then decided to paint the scene? At any rate: who wouldn't want to come home to find a large bunch of glorious lilac as they come home? The artist is Emile Baudoux (1850 -1929), who studied with Humbert and Cabanel. Paris-born, he liked to work in Normandy, where he had his studio. He exhibited his work at the "Salon des Artistes Français" until 1927, where he obtained a gold medal in 1910. The important oil on canvas presented here, dating from 1901, may have been shown at the Salon, as it bears an exhibition number "30" at the upper right of the canvas. It is signed and dated at the lower left as seen in the photos. Measuring 81 x 60 cm, the overall size including its original large oak frame...
