David Schluss Prints and Multiples
Israeli, American, b. 1943
David Schluss is a celebrated Israeli artist known for his expressive, rhythm-filled compositions that blend figurative abstraction, symbolism, and a vivid, almost musical use of color. Born in 1943 in Israel, Schluss began his artistic journey at a young age and later pursued formal training in fine arts in Canada, where he refined his distinctive visual language.
Schluss’s work is characterized by flowing, elongated figures that often appear to float or dance through space, capturing moments of intimacy, celebration, and spiritual reflection. His subjects—often musicians, lovers, and mythic characters—are rendered in richly textured surfaces, using techniques that involve layering paint and applying it with his fingers and palette knives to create a tactile, sculptural quality on canvas.
A master of serigraphy (silkscreen printing), Schluss has produced numerous limited-edition prints, many of which are hand-signed and embellished, and often include special editions such as Hors de Commerce (HC) prints. His work has been exhibited extensively in galleries throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East, and is held in private collections around the world.
Through his art, Schluss conveys a sense of universal human connection, often evoking themes of love, harmony, and movement. His style is frequently compared to Marc Chagall for its lyrical and dreamlike qualities, yet remains wholly original in its emotional intensity and visual rhythm.to

LOIS MAILOU JONES (1905-1998) was an African American artist and educator, often associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Jones was raised in Boston by working-class parents who emphasized the importance of education and hard work. After graduating from Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Jones began designing textiles for several New York firms. John “CRASH” Matos and Eric Orr met for the first time as high school students. Although the exact location is unclear, both agree that it would have been at either Fashion Moda or the Writers’ Bench at 149th Street and Grand Concourse.
Founded by Stefan Eins in 1978, Fashion Moda began as a “cultural concept” whose principles revolved around the fact that art can be made by anyone, anywhere and art should be accessible to anyone, anywhere. Located in the South Bronx, Fashion Moda embraced new talent and encouraged creative production across all mediums. The gallery has been credited as a major force behind the recognition of graffiti writing as an art form and it played a pivotal role in a community where Hip Hop was rapidly emerging. CRASH was only 19 years old when he curated “Graffiti Art Success for America” at Fashion Moda and his varied experiences at the gallery would later inspire his founding of WALLWORKS.
The 149th Street Writers’ Bench, located at the back of the uptown...
