De Sede Furniture

Swiss

A de Sede piece lends a strong personality to the room it occupies. One of the world’s most respected furniture design houses, de Sede’s quality Swiss craftsmanship has its foundation in a long history of making expertly designed saddles. Founded in 1965 to build on a successful family-run saddler’s workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland, de Sede now is a leading manufacturer of leather goods and furniture, including sofas, chairs and beds.

At the core of de Sede’s philosophy is a reverence for the complexity and beauty of handcrafted furniture in an age when mass-produced objects are the norm. Over the years, the atelier has built a name for itself in its modular furniture pieces, which are made using the highest quality leather upholstery. The sleek, elegant pieces incorporate functionality with beauty. Amongst their best-selling designs is the DS-600 introduced in 1972. Also known as the Non Stop sofa, it is a sensually curved, snaking modular sofa whose individual pieces can be zipped together to create multiple variations and arcs.

De Sede has collaborated with some of the world's finest design minds, enhancing the prestige and individuality of their products. Designers like Santiago Calatrava, Antonella Scarpitta, Stephan Hürlemann, Gordon Guillaumier and Philippe Malouin have all created pieces with the atelier. Ubald Klug’s 1974 DS-1025, also known as the Terrazza sofa, is an enduring favorite with its cascading levels of leather. In 2017, de Sede expanded its product line to include high-quality leather handbags, which are as thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted as its furniture. De Sede AG is now part of the Volare Group AG and continues to handcraft its fine furniture and other goods from its factory in Klingnau.

De Sede DS-149 Armchair in Select Cigarro
By De Sede
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Because her grandparents were tailors, designer Miriam Amelung knows the characteristics of fabric and leather down to the tiniest de- tails. In her new, elegant armchair DS-149, natural folds, organic ergonomics or the intense feeling of lightness are thus essential components – as is her dedication to the material: when Miriam and Sebastian Amelung created this new de Sede sculpture, they thought about how the natural folds of a hide might look like on a comfortable armchair. The result is an object that is free from orna- mental add-ons or special effects and is simply an armchair whose form, folds, curves and upholstery create a feeling of taking a heavenly rest break on a little cloud...

DeSede DS-707 Corner Element Sofa in Fabric Upholstery by Philippe Malouin
By De Sede, Philippe Malouin
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Where the St. Lawrence River Mon-treal flows in a serpentine pattern, a residential complex marked by the architectural style of brutalism rises up on a small headland – the famous Habitat 67. 354 concrete blocks arranged in a stepped pattern adorn a part of Montreal’s multifaceted skyline, designed by architect Moshe Safdie for Expo 67. Not far from this memorable silhouette grew up Philippe Malouin, who was inspired by these forms of brutalism through-out his life. After Malouin received the call from de Sede and initial ideas were exchanged, the designer was largely given a free hand and Malouin started his work “by making things”. Simply drawing, cutting or even folding different materials are part of the creation of the new sculpture DS-707. Philippe Malouin experimented with folding foam for the Swiss manu-facturer - the result: a modular sofa system with a traditional yet con-temporary aesthetic. Carried by the sweeping serpentines of the river, the idea for a sculpture that fuses into one form was born in the London studio near the Thames. The masterpiece DS-707 is a homage to classic de Sede designs and was created for the future. The DS-707 is the modern composition of handmade leather and contemporary design. The flowing, soft transitions combine the postmodern era of Swiss furniture design with the clear, open structures of brutalism that inspired designer Philippe Malouin. Available as a comfortable armchair or as a modular sofa that can be combined in infinite ways, the DS-707 is the visual perfection of form that gives every room a unique highlight. Designed in the style of brutalism, recounting the unruly origins of modern esthetics and dedicated to the sustainable use of materials, this sculpture is now also available with a corner element...

De Sede DS 615/93B Large Dining Table in Metal Brass Top by Mario Ferrarini
By De Sede, Mario Ferrarini
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Conical table leg seeks guests. One of the great passions of our master craftsmen is to experiment with leather as a material, always treading new paths. In the case of DS-615, they deserve all the accolades: they managed to take the idea of bringing our Artisano leather to the table and turn this into a reality. A concealed metal construction serves as a stable support for the table leg, to which four pieces of leather in the form of a cone are applied with a strap seam. Certainly, you are familiar with the spinning dances of the dervishes in their long skirts. When they celebrate their centuries-old ritual in a trance, their generous movements create a particularly impressive motif that Italian designer Mario Ferrarini could never forget. The whirling dervishes provided the inspiration for a conical table leg in which four pieces of ARTISANO leather are joined by hand with carefully applied cross stitching – the strong, shaping features of this leather are ideal for the DS 615 table series – whether as an exclusive conference table or as an eyecatcher in a stylish dining room: the table invites people to discuss, laugh, consult, eat or linger, there’s never a square moment! Additional information: Material: Marble Beligan blue top with leather Additional Information: Base Characteristics Artisano: Type: Core leather Thickness: 2.4 – 2.6 mm Characteristics: Strong, firm and durable. The saddle leather is uniquely created by nature with its pattern of pores, grain and surface structure. Its qualities make it suitable for compact seating pieces or backrests as well as smooth surfaces such as bodies and sides. Top characteristics tela: The surfaces of Tela are coated with mixtures of stone or metal. Due to an intelligent and meticulously designed mix of materials the finished table tops function as a canvas to play on. Dimensions: 180 W x 74 H Available in other base upholstery options: Naturale, fango, black Available in other top options: Metal iron, marble carrara, stone coral, stone jade, stone lapislazuli, metal brass Available in other stone options: Calacatta oro, star dust, sahara noir, rosso lepanto, verde guatemala, green botanic, beola(indoor/semi-outdoor), labrador antique...

De Sede DS-21 Three-Seat Sofa in Black Upholstery by Stephan Hürlemann
By De Sede, Stephan Hürlemann
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Opulent elements for modular use. The architectural structure of DS-21 is created by a metal frame that surrounds individual cushion volumes, seemingly carrying them effortlessly. The opulent elements counteract the clear lines of the frame. They function as modules that can be relocated. DS-21 comes in different upholstery combinations, with leather or fabric covers, and in three different frame widths with matt black or high-gloss chrome-plated metal legs. An armchair rounds out this family of seats. The DS-21 range is complemented by coffee tables and side tables with glass tops in different versions. This sculpture looks as if it has always stood there. A statement, essentially: I’ve been here forever. And yet: the proportions seem fresh and new, unused and inviting, classic and modern. DS-21 is the work of Stephan Hürlemann. The Appenzell native studied architecture at ETH Zurich and was the partner of designer Hannes Wettstein, after whose death in 2008 he took over as creative director of the world-renowned Zurich studio. Hürlemann remains true to the classic style. With the seating landscape for De Sede, he has created a floating sculpture that flirts with the lightness of being...
