Avant le Déjeuner (Before Lunch) Acrylic on canvas board 16 × 24 cm (without frame) 35.5 x 43.5 x 4 cm (with frame) Signature: Lower left; also inscribed on verso Condition: Excellent, presented in a gilded frame In Avant le déjeuner (“Before Lunch”), Grégoire Mathias creates a playful and vibrant still life where bottles of wine, a glass, and a red-checkered cloth are arranged against the backdrop of the sea. The bold shapes and saturated colors lend the work a festive, almost theatrical quality, echoing the traditions of Synthetic Cubism while infusing it with Mathias’s characteristic rhythm and modern eye. Painted in acrylic on canvas board, the piece is framed in a substantial gilded frame that enhances its presence. Despite its intimate size, the composition radiates with energy, suggesting both the convivial anticipation of a shared meal and the joy of Mediterranean light. Signed lower left, this work reflects Mathias’s ability to turn everyday objects into striking compositions of color, balance, and narrative.
