Minimalist, abstract three dimensional wall sculpture in dark oxidized metal “DNA” made by Joe Wheaton in 2019 19 x 12 x 3.5 inches, oxidized steel Hangs of a French cleat, sculpture is lightweight (weighs about 5 lbs.) Signed, verso Joe Wheaton’s unique sculptural designs welded from dark, oxidized brass or brilliant silver steel showcase a contradictory set of relationships; “beautiful yet menacing, “threatening yet delicate” as described by the artist. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Geometric spears, disks and quadrangles alternate with wispy, sharp edged lines that trail off quietly to an undefined point. This visual sweep can be likened to the art of calligraphy, echoing the artist’s interest in early Asian arts and ceramics, as well as printmaking. Artist Statement: Familiar yet strange, beautiful yet menacing, threatening yet delicate. Reaching and solid, my work traverses many contradictions. As in life, beautiful lines have sharp edges, precarious forms balance with great certainty yet are vulnerable to nature's menacing ways. I am interested in using recognizable materials and relationships in configurations that will serve to re-evaluate how one perceives what might at first seem obvious. Dark forms stand in front of their ever-changing shadows. Lines motion and engage, but are like life, elusive and mysterious. Artist Commentary: Bad Moon Ascending is a result of a lyric in the CCR song "Bad Moon Rising", the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and my sculptural pursuits of my "Event" series. Keywords: abstract, welded metal Artist Biography: Fred Klingelhofer, a primarily self-taught artist, grew up in a Chicago south side neighborhood. He received a BS degree in physics from Roosevelt University and worked as an engineer for 30 years. During those years he enrolled in art workshops and classes at a nearby community college completing courses in figure drawing, 2D and 3D design, ceramics, sculpting the figure, welding and metal sculpture. His focus has been on creating sculpture since 2006. This polished, geometric, abstract, painted steel sculpture is by artist Alexander Caldwell. Caldwell’s modern minimalist sculptures have been recognized for their masterful execution and flawless form and color. The Calgary-based artist’s work is often influenced by both nature and science. Ice Nebula is one of a series of pieces inspired by the extraordinary images of space sent to Earth by the Hubble Space Telescope. This tabletop sculpture consists of several stainless steel spheres of different sizes welded together to form a tower-like shape, mounted on a wooden base.
