Edmond Morin Art

French, 1824-1882

An influential 19th-century French etcher, lithographer, wood engraver and illustrator, Edmond Morin studied art in Paris in the studio of Gleyre. Shortly after completing his education Morin left Paris for London and remained in that city for eight years (1849–1857). During his London years, Morin achieved a large reputation for both his illustrations and wood engravings in such major publications as The Illustrated London News and Pen and Pencil. Morin returned to Paris in 1857 and immediately began exhibiting his art at the Salon. During the following years, he frequently contributed art to such journals as Magasin pittoresque, l'Illustration, le Monde illustré and La Vie parisienne. He also illustrated books such as L'Hotel des Haricots (1864), Paris-guide and Monsieur (1867), Madame et bebe (1878). Although a fine landscape and portrait artist, he became most famous for his scenes of everyday life. In this area, his splendid ability to capture a moment in time has led some scholars to link him with his Impressionist contemporaries. Pays quand Meme (Home all the Same) is a superb example of Morin's art.

Reginald Marsh "Brooklyn Bridge" NYC Modernism WPA Mid-Century Watercolor Modern

Reginald Marsh "Brooklyn Bridge" NYC Modernism WPA Mid-Century Watercolor Modern Reginald Marsh (American, 1898-1954) Brooklyn Bridge, 1940, Signed and dated Reginald Marsh May 1940 (lr), Watercolor over traces of pencil on paper , 15 x 22 inches sight. Reginald Marsh was born in Paris, France in 1898, the child of artist parents. He was born over a small cafe on Paris' Left Bank. He was brought to the United States in 1900 and was drawing before he was three. He studied art at Yale University and the Art Students League, during which time he worked primarily as an illustrator for New York newspapers and magazines. After studying in Paris in 1925 and 1926, he turned seriously to painting. In 1929 he was introduced to the egg-tempera medium, which he used extensively the rest of his life. Marsh's gusto for painting the bottom crust of society contrasted curiously with his background. His parents, both well-known artists, were steeped in academic traditions. He attended Lawrenceville Academy and Yale; perhaps this elite background made it possible to paint the earthy people he did with a journalist's objectivity. An admirer of Rubens and Delacroix, he disliked modernist art; indeed, his lifelong preoccupation was with people - enjoying themselves at beaches, at amusement parks, or on crowded city streets. Marsh was a second-generation Ash Can School painter and printmaker, best known as an urban regionalist. He spent his days sketching in small notebooks...

An original etching on watermarked laid paper by French artist Edmond Morin (1824-1882) titled "Une Averse sur le Boulevard des Italiens", 1876. Issued unsigned, though signed in the plate lower right. Printed by Delâtre and published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, 1876. Watermark upper left of sheet. Reference: Sanchez & Seydoux 1876-30. Sheet size: 11" x 7". Image size: 8" x 5.25". Light toning to sheet associated with age. In very good condition. This etching was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002.
