The composition unfolds across a succession of broad planes, leading the eye from the lush vegetation and pale winding waters of the foreground toward cultivated fields, wooded hills and the distant mountain range. Arthur builds the landscape through simplified forms and a rich yet restrained palette of deep greens, blues, ochres and earthy tones, punctuated by luminous areas of white. The vigorous, textured brushwork and deliberate simplification of the landscape give the painting a distinctly modern character.
