Lee Pennington’s (also known as Eelus) art career began in the north of England in the late ‘80s. At around 10 years old, he peddled a small edition of hand-drawn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles posters to his friends in the school playground for 10p each. The sale was a marginal success, allowing him to buy an extra chocolate bar or two on his way home. The early 2000s and a move to London opened Eelus’s eyes to the emerging world of street art. He began to experiment with his own stencil based works, painting under the moniker of Eelus. It’s after Banksy encountered the work on the streets of the East End that everything changed for Lee and after a 17 year hiatus he released his second edition through the legendary Pictures on Walls.

In his paintings, Wool contrasts bold stenciled text or abstract brushwork with white backgrounds. In the stenciled works, words run together and breaks arrive at the edges of the canvas, as seen in his Apocalypse Now (1988), which bears the phrase “SELL THE HOUSE SELL THE CAR SELL THE KIDS.” “With the painting the inspiration comes from the process of the work itself,” Wool reflected. “Like music [making the work] is an emotional experience. It’s a visual language and it’s almost impossible to put words to it.” Born on September 16, 1955 in Boston, MA, Wool studied briefly at Sarah Lawrence College, but quickly left to enroll at the New York Studio School. A contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, and others in New York’s downtown art scene in the 1980s, Wool introduced graffiti techniques to his work, later incorporating silkscreens and paint rollers. The artist’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wool currently lives and works between Marfa, TX and New York, NY with his wife the painter Charline von Heyl.

This print is hand signed by Eelus and is numbered over an edition of 175 copies. It also has the dry stamp of the artist and is sent along with the certificate of authenticity also issued by Eelus. Along with its sister "Summoning", this work has a different style that contrasts with previous works such as "After the rain" or "Dressed up" in the use of colour. In this case Eelus mixes the colours and these are overlapped creating different gradients instead of being flat and clearly separated from each other. ABOUT THE ARTIST This English born in Wigan, northwest England, in 1979, is one of the most important artists on the street art scene. Eelus left his hometown and moved to London in 2000. At that time, artists like Banksy and Ben Eine already had a major artistic presence and street art began to gain a foothold in the greatest galleries. When the workshop Pictures on Walls gave Eelus the opportunity to promote his first graphic work, it ended up being sold almost immediately, making it clear that Eelus had entered the art scene going strong.
