Elizabeth Lennie Paintings

Canadian
Water has been the backdrop to the significant events in my life. The reconstruction of radiant moments that exist in memory define the images I choose to paint, of swimming in the liquid landscapes of northern Ontario and the aqua waters of the Caribbean. I work with oil paint on canvas, layering thin washes with thicker impasto, occasionally working on wood panel and incorporating cold wax and graphite. The images are often figurative and explore the memory myth of summer, and the dual reality of the Canadian hot and cold climate. The paintings are the map of my world, in both abstract and narrative form. I look for archetypes, in an attempt to explore notions of self and community within the resonance of shared memory. It is the past/present/future illusion that I seek to define in my work. This drives me to explore and paint the same image repeatedly, looking for an entry point into the subconscious, occasionally scratching notes into the paint as symbols to carry the work forward. By isolating and extracting vibrant colors in a signature soft-focus style, a utopian childhood is recalled, creating the memory myth of shared experience here on earth. "How remarkable it is that you have chosen as two of your recurring themes, swimming in summer in the Canadian Shield, and skating on those same lakes when winter descends. Remarkable because you have lived your whole life in Canada, in Ontario even, and yet you have understood what is best about the place where you live. Most people have to move far away to figure that sort of thing out. They can only understand the nature of the mountain when they have seen it from the plain. You, my dear friend, have the wisdom to see the beauty of where you are, while you are there, and that ability is as rare as...the world becoming a skating rink over which you can fly." —Johnny Wales, Sado Island, Japan

Dimensions: (Frame) H 28.5" x W 35.5" (Painting) H 22" x W 30" Miguel Ángel Aybar Llauca, an artist specializing in expressionist painting, was born in Huancavelica and lives in the city of Ica where he began drawing from a very young age, drawing from its beautiful valleys and customs. In 1970 he began his studies in Drawing, Painting and Sculpture at the Regional School of Ica. He is a graduate of the National Superior Autonomous School of Fine Arts of Peru (1971-1976) with honorable mention, forming the promotion "Juan Manuel Ugarte Eléspuru". "Iqueño Expressionism" is the title of the exhibition that will be available to the public from May 25 to June 13 in the "Paracas" Room of the "Adolfo Bermúdez Jenkins" Regional Museum of Ica. Av. Ayabaca block 8°. Miguel Angel Aybar is a painter who characterizes expressionism in Ica without a doubt. His songs speak of longing, and secret friendships with the hurango, the palm tree of Huacachina or the silent and still sand of Ica. His work is primarily characterized by color. The contrasts between the intense dark contrasted with the radiance of reds, oranges, yellows or greens, achieve a positive effect on the observer. Its warm tones reach high levels like an Ica sun at noon. However, among those quasi Servulian colors , Andean prints maintain their presence. Hats, ponchos or skirts hidden from a root bound by blood or memories. The perfect textures of his works give him the seal, the personality that characterizes a curdled and experienced Aybar who no longer needs to dialogue with the brush; they just flow, hand and brush. When entering the exhibition hall, you do not need to read the signature, he is an Aybar. There is no room for confusion. Although there are not a few artists from Ica who use these boiling tones, and I translate it as a tribute to that Sérvulo that touches you in the depths of your being, if you are an artist and you live in Ica, you want to be possessed by the ghost of the disturbing Sérvulo Gutiérrez turned legend. Servulus still catches the spectator being absorbed, as if observing a volcano, fearing that it might erupt, but with an inexplicable delight that he stops you next to him and captures you. However, Aybar no longer needs Servulo's shadow, he has gained an important space in the artistic world of Ica. He is an artist and a close friend of poets and musicians. Painter recognized by the Ica society and deserving of all the medals and recognitions by the different institutions. He not only paints with mastery, as Alberto Dávila predicted, when he said that his maturity would give him the position that corresponds to him. He now sings in public to the delight of his closest friends. Ica recognizes him as a son and has given him the place that corresponds to this remarkable painter whom I congratulate. DATA ABOUT THE ARTIST Miguel Angel Aybar Yauca, was born in 1952 in Huancavelica. He has lived in Ica since he was very young; he began his art studies at the Ica Regional School of Fine Arts. He later moved to Lima to study at the National Autonomous School of Fine Arts of Peru from where he graduated in 1976. His teacher Alberto Dávila described him as: a restless, imaginative young man with a sober and dramatic color. His forms acquire poise and great eloquence . Aybar also had the painter Carlos Aitor Castillo...

Untitled

By David Smith

"Untitled" is a painting by artist David Smith. The work is signed and dated in the upper left "David Smith (symbol) 1936". When David Smith set up a workshop on the Brooklyn Navy Pier in 1933 to learn direct-metal techniques, he shared the space not with artists, but with professional welders. Yet as he stated in 1964, ‘…all my early friends were painters…I never conceived of myself as anything other than a painter because my work came straight through the raised surface.’ Picasso and Cubism would be dominant influences in Smith’s work. He understood that Picasso imagined the world as a sculptor might, and not necessarily limited to the unavoidable impact of Cubism. In addition to pursuing a kind of rethinking of the world in three-dimensionality on his own terms, by the late 1920s, Picasso had shown interest in surrealism. That meant drawing not as a depiction of reality, but rather as a reconfiguration of the body in an assemblage of often precariously balanced, interconnected forms — some expressed in a three-dimensional form, others as drawings or paintings. Those processes are reflected in this work by David Smith; three fanciful totemic assemblages set within a landscape perspective of ground, mountains, and sky and whose presence is surreal enough to cast shadows under a presumed solar presence. Untitled, 1936 embraces surrealism, yet also serves to demonstrate the extent to which his thought processes are inextricably linked to sculpture and related to scale, spatial orientation, and three-dimensionality. With that in mind, it is not surprising to know that Smith saw no demarcation between sculpture and painting, or that a painting such as Untitled (1936) can exist outside of planning or design for future three-dimensional work. "Untitled" is a painting by American artist David Smith. David Smith’s paintings from the 1930s rarely come to market, and when Untitled (Billiard Players) surfaced at a Christie’s auction in 2018, it created quite a stir, realizing an impressive price of $1.15 million. Painted around the same time, Untitled shares many similarities with Untitled (Billiard Players). Both paintings affirm Smith’s place among the American artists when ideas and style began to intermingle and coalesce around Picasso’s innovations. Uniquely positioned in temperament and ability, Smith was a man of considerable ambition whose direct-metal configurations would have much to do with achieving new ideas about abstraction. Yet all along, he insisted he was a painter, not a sculptor who painted. Paintings by Smith...
