Ernesto Tatafiore Art

Italian, b. 1943
Ernesto Tatafiore (b. 1943, Naples) is an Italian contemporary artist whose career spans more than five decades and embraces painting, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed-media assemblage. Originally trained in medicine with a specialization in psychiatry, Tatafiore ultimately dedicated himself to art, developing a practice that combines intellectual rigor with playful visual invention. He first came to public attention in 1969 with a solo exhibition at Lucio Amelio’s influential gallery in Naples, a space that also championed figures such as Warhol, Beuys, and Rauschenberg. Tatafiore’s work resists strict categorization but has long been associated with themes of history, politics, and myth. He often revisits the imagery of the French Revolution, casting its ideals, contradictions, and allegories into colorful compositions that blend figuration, abstraction, and symbolism. Across etchings, aquatints, lithographs, collages, and hand-painted works, he develops a visual language that is both erudite and whimsical—balancing irony with cultural commentary. Throughout his career, Tatafiore has exhibited internationally, with appearances at the Venice Biennale (1970, 1980, 1990) and solo shows across Europe and the United States. His art is represented in major collections and has been presented in institutions ranging from Naples to Vienna and New York. For collectors, Tatafiore’s posters and limited-edition prints hold particular appeal. Produced with high-quality printers and often in small runs, these works demonstrate his inventive use of graphic media and remain accessible compared to unique paintings or sculptures. Many of his editions are signed, numbered, or specially annotated, adding to their desirability. Over time, such pieces—especially those tied to landmark exhibitions—have gained recognition as both historical documents and valuable works of postwar Italian art.
