Eytan Brandes bought a trio of carved amethysts (cut for earrings and a pendant) at a trade show several years ago. Originally, he intended them as a matched set with a lot of diamonds, but he never got around to it and eventually put the project aside. The body color of this huge Ethiopian opal is sort of a pastel orange, but green, yellow and red flashes abound. The entire effect changes in every lighting situation. Even in indirect natural light, when some orange opals tend to look soupy, this stone takes on a gorgeous moire sheen.
