Echo - Monochromatic Scene, Ladder and Doors in Muted Gray, Original Oil, Framed

By John Seubert

Located in Chicago, IL

A ladder and several doors seemingly float in air while a full moon illuminates this surreal scene. "Echo" is painted in muted shades of grey bringing a melancholy to the overall aesthetic. The original oil painting is framed in a repurposed frame that the artist has distressed and painted. It measures 24h x 30w inches. John Seubert Echo, 2023 oil on canvas 16h x 20w in 40.64h x 50.80w cm JSE077 John Seubert b. 1958, Chicago, IL In the early Nineties, John Seubert was living in a former hotel in a high-rise building on St. James Place in Chicago. The apartment was tiny, as hotel rooms tend to be, and clad with paper-thin walls allowing sound to pass from one apartment to the other. At the time, John’s artwork consisted of pounding copper sheets into tables which was a noisy endeavor to say the least. Following several noise complaints from the neighbors, John had a dream that he was living in a ramshackle house but with plenty of room to work and no attached neighbors. The following day after lunching at the McDonalds in Lincoln Park, John wandered the neighborhood a came upon a shabby, falling-down old Victorian house. He located the real estate agent, put in an offer, and weeks later was pushing a shopping cart full of his belongings to his new home. This 144-year-old Painted Lady provided a blank canvas for this inimitable artist. For many years the house remained so empty that John was able to ride his Japanese fold up bike throughout the 1st floor. “Some people want to have sex...

Contaminating the Innocent - Young Girl Swimming Surrounded by Plastic Waste

By Bruno Surdo

Located in Chicago, IL

This painting reflects Bruno Surdo’s continued engagement with classical realism as a vehicle for contemporary allegory. A young girl, centered and frontal, sits in an inflatable ring surrounded by floating plastic waste—bottles, containers, straws—both above and beneath the water’s surface. The composition is calm, almost symmetrical, yet emotionally unsettling. Surdo’s atelier-based training is evident in the careful modeling of the child’s anatomy, the naturalistic rendering of skin tones, and the controlled atmospheric perspective. The figure is painted with the same dignity and structural clarity found in Renaissance portraiture, elevating what could be a simple environmental image into a modern history painting. Art historically, the work draws from the tradition of allegorical portraiture, where innocence is personified to communicate moral themes. The child recalls Renaissance depictions of putti or symbolic youth figures, yet here innocence is placed in peril. The floating debris creates a contemporary vanitas motif: instead of skulls and extinguished candles, the symbols of decay are plastic and petroleum byproducts—markers of environmental neglect. The waterline dividing the composition subtly recalls the layered moral narratives of Baroque painting, where surface beauty often concealed deeper truths. The title, Contaminating the Innocent, underscores this allegorical intent, transforming the image into a meditation on generational responsibility. Within Surdo’s broader oeuvre—often concerned with spectacle, identity, and human consequence—this painting shifts toward ecological consciousness. Yet it remains consistent with his practice of grounding urgent modern themes in the visual authority of classical technique. By presenting environmental degradation through the lens of Renaissance-informed realism, Surdo avoids didactic illustration and instead creates a quiet, haunting indictment. The stillness of the child’s gaze contrasts with the chaos of the polluted water, reinforcing the central tension: the vulnerability of innocence in a world shaped by adult action. FABIO AGUZZI Lombardi, b. 1953 Born in Lombardy in 1953, Fabio Aguzzi is an accomplished painter whose mastery of light is apparent in his distinct still lifes, portraits, and landscapes. Aguzzi took an interest in art at an early age. After sketching an impressive reproduction of Raphael's "The Duke of Montefeltro" in the margins of his schoolwork notebook, his teacher took the drawing to Aguzzi's father, Lino, and insisted the boy pursue artistic studies at Brera. Lino, a hobbyist painter himself, recognized and supported his son's talent. Aguzzi left his home in Vidigulfo to study at Brera School in Milan. From there, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts (where he would later teach). Here, he studied sculpture under the tutelage of Alik Cavaliere and painting with Vincenzo Ferrari. He also worked as an assistant to Annibale Biglione in his studio. In the 1960s, Aguzzi began to teach while becoming a prolific painter.
