Frank Moss Bennett Paintings

British, 1874-1952
Moss Bennett was born in Liverpool and started painting from a very young age. He attended the Slade School of Art and became a professional painter of mostly landscapes and detailed interior scenes. His work, like a lot of artist in the early 20th century, was period in feel and he often painted his pictures out of period but adding authentic costume to his models and props. Some of his paintings have achieved eye watering prices at auction in the tens of thousands and some in excess of 50,000 pounds. His work is beautiful and wonderfully observed, his eye for detail is astonishing. He was a popular painter in his time and remains so to this day.

Early 20th century English oil painting of a chapel by Frank Moss Bennett English, 1918 Canvas: Height 35cm, width 25cm Frame: Height 57cm, width 47cm, depth 6cm This atmospheric oil on canvas by noted English painter Frank Moss Bennett (1874–1952) captures the quiet beauty of the Martyn Chapel within St Mary’s Church, Puddletown, Dorset. Known for his affinity for architectural subjects and historical scenes, Bennett presents here a masterful interpretation of medieval ecclesiastical design. Executed in November 1918, the painting demonstrates Bennett’s refined technique and keen eye for architectural accuracy. His skill in manipulating colour and light is evident throughout the work, particularly in the vivid portrayal of the chapel’s stained-glass window. Multicoloured light dances across the aged stonework, adding warmth and depth to the sacred interior. St Mary’s Church, originally built during the Norman period, retains many 12th century features alongside elements from later restorations. Bennett was deeply inspired by Dorset’s heritage buildings and natural scenery, and this location featured frequently in his body of work. The canvas is presented in a richly carved giltwood frame. It is signed and dated ‘FMB / Nov 1918’ at the lower right and inscribed on the reverse with the title ‘The Martyn Chapel, St. Mary’s, Puddletown’. An artist’s biography is also affixed to the back. This fine example of early 20th century British painting...

Richard Ball Spencer British, (1812-1897) The Perthshire off Ailsa Craig Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 22.25 inches x 36.25 inches Size including frame: 31 inches x 45 inches This painting by Richard Ball Spencer is of the Perthshire, a three-masted barque sailing off Ailsa Craig. The Perthshire was built in Dundee in 1874 and was owned by Thomas Law of 123 Hope Street, Glasgow. The red ensign flying on the mizzenmast indicates it was a British merchant or passenger ship. The owner may well have commissioned the painting to commemorate its maiden voyage. Ailsa Craig, pictured to the far left, is a small uninhabited island off the west mainland of Scotland in the outer Firth of Clyde. The island is made up of volcanic rock which was quarried in the past and is now only used as a source of microgranite to make curling stones. The island is known by a number of different names including A' Chreag (the rock) and Creag Alasdair (Alasdair's rock). It was also sometimes referred to in the past as ‘Paddy’s Milestone’ as it marked the halfway of the sea journey Belfast to Glasgow made by Irish Emigrants seeking work. Richard Ball Spencer was born in London’s East End on 11 November, 1812 to John and Elizabeth Ball. His father was a grocer and the family lived at 106 York Road in Mile End. Both Richard and his brother Thomas were given their mother’s maiden name as their middle names. By 1841, he had established himself as a marine painter specialising in ship portraits and was influenced by artists such as Joseph Heard (1799-1859), William John Huggins (1781-1845) and Robert Salmon (c1775-1845). He spent his time travelling to trading ports around the British coast as well as the nearby London docks of Brunswick Wharf and the Isle of...

Frank Moss Bennett British, (1874-1952) A Meeting of the Dillettanti Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 14.5 inches x 19.5 inches Size including frame: 19.5 inches x 24.5 inches Provenance: Harrods, Knightsbridge, London A well observed genre painting of a group of gentlemen in 18th century costume by Frank Moss Bennett. The men are depicted in a richly decorated interior of a stately home discussing the merits of two statues over a glass of wine. Frank Moss Bennett was a portrait and genre painter who was born in Liverpool on November 15, 1874. He was the son of the Iron Founder Henry Mellor Bennett who was also became mayor of Liverpool. His family’s wealth enabled him to receive a good education, initially with a governess and then at Clifton College in Bristol. His talent for art emerged at a young age, however it was not until he left Bristol that he decided to follow a career in painting. He moved to London in 1892, most likely with his family who went to live in Croydon after his father’s retirement. There he studied at the Slade School of Art where he was taught by Henry Tonks and John Singer Sargent. He also met fellow artist Eddie Wells who became his friend, travel partner and brother-in-law. He later attended the St John’s School of Art and in 1896 entered the Royal Academy school, winning a gold medal and a scholarship to travel. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1898 with a work entitled ‘A Book Plate’, continuing to exhibit there until 1929. He also exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. In 1900, Bennett used his scholarship money to go on a painting expedition to Italy with his friend Wells. On his return he lived with his family at 18 Warrington Road, Croydon and took a studio nearby at Alipore, Duppas Hill, where he began specialising in historical genre and portraits. His work portrayed life in seventeenth and eighteenth century England, depicting figures in tavern interiors, gentlemen discussing affairs of State or at leisure in their homes. He wanted his works to be historically accurate and used authentic props and antiques. He also accrued a large collection of costumes, some of which were later given to the Platt Hall Museum, Manchester and the Museum of London. He also developed an interest in historical architecture, particularly Tudor and made many sketches of buildings...
