GEORGES CAPON "NU ASSIS" OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED FRANCE, C. 1930 28 X 23 INCHES Georges Capon 1890-1980 Georges Capon was born in Paris in 1890. He studied at l’École Germain Pilon. Capon was a painter of Montmartre. He exhibited regularly at the Salon D’Automne, Salon des Artistes Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries. He was mobilized in World War One and served throughout the war. Capon exhibited his work for many years in solo exhibitions at the Galerie Berthe Weill on the Rue Lafitte, in Paris. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1931. Capon’s work is distinguished by its uniformly high quality and always interesting, sometimes satirical depictions of his subjects. Modern technique and style define his body of work. Like his friends Dufy, Gromaire and Savin, he captured the cafes and nightclubs along with urban and country landscapes. Capon’s paintings are often exquisitely beautiful, nicely drawn with perfectly balanced colors and strong composition. He was also known to have been friends with Jacques Wolf and Cubist painter Pierre Hodé.
