Georges d’Espagnat was born in 1870 in Melun, France. He was a painter, muralist, illustrator and theater designer. His family moved to Paris in the 1880s and at the age of 18 he declined the academic training of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and chose instead to independently study the works of the Old Masters in the Louvre and attend classes at the free academy.
In 1891 d’Espagnat began exhibiting at the Salon des Refusees and in the following year exhibited four paintings at the Salon des Independants. He later exhibited at the Salon of the Societe Nationale as well. Although associated with many of the greatest names in 20th century art, and though his work has at various times been identified as Fauve, Nabis or Impressionist, he retained his own individuality. He was influential in the art circles of his time with the likes of Matisse, Gauguin, Picasso, Pissarro and Chagall. d’Espagnat also became closely acquainted with many of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists including Renoir, Vuillard, Andre, Bonnard and Denis. In 1895 he had his first solo show in Paris and three years later a show at Durand-Ruel Gallery. He was part of a group exhibition in 1907 at the Marcel Bernheim Gallery along with Bonnard, Cezanne, Matisse, Pissarro, Rouault, Suerat and Toulouse-Lautrec while in 1926 his works were a part of another exhibition at the same gallery along with Andre, Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Matisse, Picasso and Signac.
In 1903 d’Espagnat was one of the founding members of the Salon d’Automne and, a year later, became the vice president. In 1906 he collaborated on the illustrations for Remy de Gourmont’s Sixtine, and later worked with Alphonse Daudet on his book, L’Immortel. Traveling extensively throughout his lifetime, D’Espagnat visited Britain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Morocco and Spain.
His work can be found in many museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Musee Royal des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute, Chicago; the Pushkin Museum, Moscow and the Musee d’Orsay.(Biography provided by Wiscasset Bay Gallery)

Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants.
By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style.
D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). The simple composition, which represents a woman from behind, bears the influence of Matisse's avant-garde style, with bold and refined color combinations. The shape is created with color, creating an almost surreal and highly expressive effect.
The painter once said: "My painting has always been figurative, not realistic. In this sense I felt very similar to the Informal movement, which, fundamentally, pushed my passion for color to the extreme."

Pincherle Adriana
Rome 25 December 1905 - Florence 8 January 1996
Adriana was born in Rome on 25 December 1905, into a family in which two cultures were intertwined: the Jewish one of her father, the engineer Carlo Pincherle, of Venetian origins and in love with painting, and the Catholic one of her mother, Isa di she. De Marsanich, a noble but decayed Hungarian.
Adriana is the eldest child and two years older than her brother Alberto, known to the literary world under the pseudonym Alberto Moravia
As Pincherle herself says about her, as a child she spent hours admiring her father who painted watercolours, and it was perhaps then that her interest in drawing and above all her particular sensitivity towards color was born. Thus, having completed her classical studies, she began to attend the "ladies" atelier of the engraver Alfredo Petrucci and the free nude courses at the Academy, where she met Mimmo Spadini and Scipione, and came into contact with Roman art. In 1931 she made her debut at the collective "First Roman exhibition of female art" at the "Galleria di Roma", while the following year, at the same gallery, she exhibited a solo show together with Corrado Cagli, already attracting the attention of critics, famous comment by Longhi, cited several times by Pincherle herself, who prefers the "sissy" between the two artists. As evidence of the results achieved by Adriana since her first works, we remember that among her works presented in 1932 there was also the famous "Standing Self-Portrait", now in the Uffizi
Pincherle's growth passes through places and periods common to both the Roman School and the school of painters of the via Cavour group (Mafai, Raphaël, Scipione), with tangents and deviations, but his pictorial research arrives at original solutions independent of any label .
Fundamental to the maturation of her art was her stay in Paris in 1933, in which Pincherle admired and studied closely the Fauves, Renoir and in particular Matisse. In the same year she exhibited for the first time in Florence at the Sala d'arte delle Nazioni with Milena Barilli...

His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France.
In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948).
D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque.
