Giovanni Boldini, painter, drypoint engraver and lithographer, was not only a key figure on the Italian arts scene but also a leading figure in European engraving.
Elegance and perfect touch characterize the graphic production of this artist from Ferrara, with some works derived from oil portraits and others executed directly on the plate without any preparation.
Although Boldini produced relatively few engravings, his contribution to this field is of very considerable interest and of great importance.
With their incomparable beauty allied with purity of touch and modern lines, Boldini’s engravings may often be considered as being on par with the works of his more famous contemporaries.
Boldini appears to have done his engravings for himself (the only exception is Cavalli da traino -Draught horses- done in 1889 for the Milanese publishers Fratelli Treves), and this seems to have been a carefully considered decision on his part.
