James McBey. 1931. Drypoint. 8 7/8 x 5 7/8 (sheet 11 1/2 x 9 ). An extremely rich impression with drypoint burr, printed by the artist on cream wove paper. Signed in the plate lower left: "Walter Tittle / London." Signed and annotated 'imp' in pencil, indicating a proof printed by Tittle.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- James McBey (1883-1959) was a self-taught Scottish etcher, watercolorist and painter whose prints were highly valued during the later stages of the etching revival in the early 20th century. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by Aberdeen University. --------------------------------------------- Walter Ernest Tittle was born in Sprinfield, Ohio on October 9, 1883. Tittle studied at the New York School of Art and Art Students League under Chase, Henri, and Mora. As well as an artist, he was also a writer who contributed to Century magazine, Scribner's, and Illustrated London News. In the 1950s he was in Danbury, Connecticut and later settled on the Monterey Peninsula. He died in Carmel, CA on March 27, 1966. Exhibited: National Academy of Design; Royal Society of Artists (London); National Arts Club, 1931; California Printmaker Society, 1932; Chicago Society of Etchers, 1934; Corcoran Gallery (Washington, DC) 1937.
