Glenn of California Cabinets
Credited for being at the forefront of the West Coast modernist design movement, Glenn of California introduced a relaxed, breezy and elegant style to postwar America. The company was based in Arcadia, California, a city situated near Los Angeles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. It specialized in the production of easily accessible and reasonably affordable furnishings that included credenzas, chairs, cabinets, tables and more.
However, it wasn’t until Glenn of California hired the prolific American furniture designer Milo Baughman that the company made a name for itself in the annals of American mid-century modern design. Baughman prioritized function — he worked with simple forms and often used sleek, flat-bar chromed metal and natural materials such as walnut in his pieces.
Glenn of California marketed Baughman’s designs along with those of unsung Swedish architect and designer Greta Magnusson Grossman in their successful California Modern collection. The first woman to receive an award from the Swedish Society of Industrial Design, Magnusson Grossman drew on her Scandinavian heritage to create iconic homes as well as furnishings for Glenn and other companies that helped define mid-century-era Southern California. The furniture she and Baughman designed became known for its laid-back Los Angeles style and thoughtful integration of walnut, iron and Formica.
In addition to employing the talents of Baughman and Magnusson Grossman, Glenn of California collaborated with several other notable and influential designers. These included Stanley Young, Kipp Stewart, John Kapel and Paul Laszlo. Laszlo, an American-Hungarian architect, interior designer and furniture designer, was well-regarded among Hollywood’s elite and designed pieces for Cary Grant, Barbara Stanwyck and Elizabeth Taylor.
While the company is no longer in business, vintage Glenn of California furniture remains highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts.

What a beautiful way to spoil your lingerie!! This is a stunning vintage mid-century modern lingerie chest designed by Glenn of California. It is comprised of GORGEOUS rosewood top and drawer fronts bordered by an aluminum strip, grooved handle pulls on the sides of the drawers, cased with black painted sides. It has eight drawers that graduate in size from smaller at the top to larger at the bottom. Maybe you don’t have lingerie?? No worries!! Although it is called a lingerie chest you could certainly use it as a tall, narrow dresser in your bedroom or dressing area. It would be a lovely cabinet to use in a study, office, hall, or entry for linens, books, office supplies, or anything you want to stow away in a phenomenal piece of mid-century modern excellence.
Glenn of California was owned by father and son team Isaac and Robert Baron and based in Arcadia California and has been credited for being at the forefront of the West Coast modernist design movement in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The company made a name for itself when it hired Milo Baughman. They would go on to hire Swedish architect and designer Greta Magnusson-Grossman, the first woman to receive an award from the Swedish Society of Industrial Design. The significant furniture line she and Baughman designed called the California Modern Collection became known for its laid-back Los Angeles style and integration of walnut, iron, and Formica. Glenn of California collaborated with many notable designers including Kipp Stweart, Paul Laslo, John Kapel, & Stanley Young. All painted wood surfaces have been professionally sanded, primed, and refinished; the formerly green doors now glow in a canary yellow lacquer that captures the playful, optimistic spirit of the 1970s. The body is a crisp white that contrasts beautifully with the yellow doors. Chrome pulls and the laminate top have been buffed to a glass-like shine, restoring both brilliance and tactile smoothness.
Behind two hinged doors sits a removable/adjustable shelf, enabling flexible storage for records, media components, or barware. A discreet hole has been drilled in the back panel to allow wires to pass through and components to vent, so it works as a media cabinet or dry bar with elegance.
