Gustave Bourgogne Art

French, 1888-1968
Gustave Bourgogne was a French painter born in 1888 in Veigné, Indre-et-Loire, and passed away in Paris in 1968. He distinguished himself through his landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes, capturing with sensitivity the light and atmosphere of the places he depicted. In 1932, alongside Henri Valensi, Charles Blanc-Gatti, and Vittorio Straquadanini, Bourgogne co-founded the Musicalist movement, seeking to create a correspondence between painting and music by translating rhythms and sound harmonies into pictorial compositions. Within the artistic context of the time, Bourgogne evolved among contemporaries such as Henri Valensi, with whom he shared an innovative vision of art, integrating musical concepts into their works. The Musicalist movement, though less well-known than other currents, reflects a period of experimentation and research into the correspondences between the arts.

Chiura Obata Nasturtiums, circa 1940 Signed and stamped lower left Watercolor on paper 15 x 9 5/8 inches Born in the Okayama prefecture of Japan, Chiura Obata was adopted by his uncle, an artist. As a child he was trained in ink painting, and at 14 he was apprenticed to the painter Murata Tanryo in Tokyo. He also studied with Kogyo Terasaki and Goho Hasimoto. In 1903, Obata moved to San Francisco and began working as an illustrator for The New World and The Japanese American, two of the city's Japanese newspapers. He also did work as a commercial designer. Obata helped establish the East West Art Society in San Francisco in 1921, which sought to promote cross-cultural understanding through art. This goal was reflected in his embrace of the Nihonga style, which fused traditional Japanese sumi-e ink painting with the conventions of western naturalism. He spent much of the 1920s painting landscapes throughout California, and among his favorite subjects were mountain landscapes. In 1927, he visited Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada, creating over a hundred paintings and sketches of the high country. Obata stayed in the USA until the death of his father in 1928. Between 1928 and 1932, he worked in Tokyo as a painter and transformed his California landscape watercolors...

Orpheus is an artwork realized by Gustave Bourgogne in the 1940s.  Pencil and watercolor, ink on paper.  Good conditions. Gustave Bourgogne (1888-1968), a french painter born in 1888 in Veigné in Indre et Loire and died in Paris in 1968. He excelled in landscapes, still lifes and portraits and specialized in the abstract interpretation of great musical compositions. In 1928, hearing the great carillon of the cathedral of Mechelen, he had the revelation of the correspondence of sounds and colors and began to reproduce in his paintings the impressions felt while listening to music, considering that painting is like music, the result of the same deep rhythm. In the company of Henri Valensi, Charles Blanc-Gatti and Vito Stracquadaini, Gustave Bourgogne published the Musicalism Manifesto in 1932 and created with them the Association of Musical Artists. He exhibited his works at the first three salons of musical artists (which were held at the Renaissance Gallery) which were joined by, among others, Louise...
