Hans Jacob Hansen was born in Leith, Edinburgh. He was the son of a merchant and shipbroker. Hansen was brought up in Edinburgh, where he studied art under R.B Nisbet and J Ross, developing a style superficially similar to Melville. He worked extensively abroad in the Middle East, North Africa and Spain, visiting Russia in the 1870s. He died in 1947.
