Henri Lebasque Art
French, 1865-1937
Henri Lebasque (25 September 1865 – 7 August 1937) was a French post-impressionist painter. He was born at Champigné (Maine-et-Loire). Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 with his friend Henri Matisse. Two years later, a group of artists exhibited there including Georges Rouault, André Derain, Édouard Vuillard, and Matisse. Lebasque also became friends with artists such as Gustave Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Louis Valtat, and Henri Manguin, the last of whom introduced Lebasque to the South of France. His time in South of France would lead to a radical transformation in Lebasque’s paintings, changing his colour palette forever. Other travels included the Vendée, Normandy, and Brittany. His work is represented in French museums, notably Angers, Geneva (Petit Palais), Lille (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Nantes, and Paris (Musée d’Orsay). Lebasque died at Cannet, Alpes Maritimes in 1937.to

Sitges Spain oil on canvas painting mediterranean art spanish seascape
By Rafael Durancamps
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Sitges
Artist: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979)
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 38 x 61 cm (14.96 x 24.01 in)
Support: Canvas stretched over wooden stretcher
Framing: Unframed
Signature: Signed lower left: Durancamps
Period: 1960s (estimated based on style, technique, and materials)
Work Description
The painting Sitges depicts an evocative scene of the iconic Catalan coastal town. At the center stands the unmistakable silhouette of the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, surrounded by cascading white houses that descend toward the shore. A solitary fisherman in the foreground casts his rod from the sand, adding a human and melancholic dimension to the landscape.
The composition reflects Rafael Durancamps’s mastery in atmospheric construction: the balance between sky, architecture, and figure is achieved through loose yet controlled brushstrokes, and a sober palette dominated by earthy tones, ochres, blues, and greys. The scene conveys stillness, everyday life, and a sense of belonging to the landscape—recurring qualities in the artist’s work.
Artist Biography: Rafael Durancamps i Folguera (1891–1979)
Born in Sabadell, Rafael Durancamps was one of the leading Catalan figurative painters of the 20th century. Initially trained under Joan Vila Cinca and a friend of Joaquim Mir, he chose a personal path that distanced him from avant-garde movements. In 1926, he moved to Paris, where he founded La Fenêtre Ouverte gallery, bringing together artists such as Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso.
After permanently returning to Barcelona in 1939, he exhibited regularly at Sala Parés and established a distinctive style rooted in lyrical light, intimate observation of everyday life, and a refined technique—particularly in still lifes, landscapes, and solitary figures.
His work is held in major collections, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Montserrat Museum, the Sabadell Art Museum, and the BBVA Collection.

Shepherd in the Pyrenees by Enric Porta i Mestre depicts a rural scene with a striking sense of introspection and evocative charm. The painting portrays a shepherd tending to his flock amidst the mountainous landscape typical of the Catalan Pyrenees. The composition captures the serenity and beauty of nature through vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes.
The work reflects a Post-Impressionist style with loose, bold strokes and vivid tones, combined with Expressionist influences in its ability to evoke emotions beyond the physical depiction. The energetic and textured brushwork infuses the painting with a lively rhythm, while the rich palette of greens and blues immerses the viewer in the landscape's tranquil atmosphere.
In this piece, Porta i Mestre showcases a mastery of color and light, illustrating his deep connection to his homeland and its rural life, which served as a source of inspiration throughout his career.

Oil on paper on panel
Signed “Lebasque” (bottom right)
In this effusive oil on paper, Henri Lebasque captures a quiet, contemplative scene of a young girl sewing. Her eyes intently trained on the piece of white fabric in front of her, the artist makes the scene come alive with vibrant hues of orange, red and purple. The subject and her surroundings are rendered in loose, stylized brushstrokes that imbue the work with energy and vitality. Often called the “painter of joy and light,” Lebasque’s talent for creating bright, airy canvases is on magnificent display here.
Henri Lebasque is remembered as a remarkable Post-Impressionist painter. Rooting himself in the Parisian art scene in the early 20th century, he exhibited in the influential Salon des Indépendants alongside artists like Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. He then went on to found the Salon d’Automne with Henri Matisse and other artist friends. His friendships with these artists and his visits to the south of France, initially encouraged by fellow painter Henri Manguin...

Henri Lebasque studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, then, after moving to Paris in 1886, studied briefly under Bonnat, then under Humbert, whom he assisted in the decoration of the Panthéon. More importantly, he met and learned from Pissarro.
In 1893 he met Luce and Signac at the Salon des Indépendants, and as a result he adopted Pointillism for a few years. In the 1900s he lived in Lagny with his family and painted landscapes of the neighbouring Marne forest. His painting underwent drastic changes when he discovered the south of the country. He would thereafter live in other French regions: Vendée, Brittany and Normandy, where he stayed at Les Andelys for some time, but his home from home was between Sanary and Nice.
He painted members of his family in the settings in which he lived, mostly in Provence. His work shares some themes of his friend Bonnard. But although he exhibited with the Fauves, and admired Matisse, Rouault, Dufy, Valtat and Manguin (who introduced him to the Midi), he remained distinct from them in style. Lebasque was well known in his lifetime. He collaborated on the decorations of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and of the Atlantic liner Paris. He is remembered for: Nymphs at their Bath; The Sunshade; Girl with Hydrangeas; Great Nude on a Pink Sofa.
He took part in the following collective exhibitions: Salon des Indépendants, 1886; Salon des Artistes Français; and later the Salon d'Automne, of which he was a founding member in 1903 and on whose committee he sat until his death. A set of his works was shown in 1937 at Masters of Independent Art ( Maîtres de l'Art Indépendant) at the Petit Palais. In 1957, 20 years after his death, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice, and in 1981 his works were exhibited at St-Paul-de-Vence.

Madame Lebasque et sa fille Marthe (Madame Lebasque and her Daughter Marthe)
By Henri Lebasque
Located in New Orleans, LA
Signed “Lebasque” (lower left)
Oil on canvas
While also a painter of nudes and landscapes, the Post-Impressionist Henri Lebasque is perhaps most celebrated for his intimate portrayals of his family life. Madame Lebasque et sa fille Marthe is an exceptional example of this coveted subset of works within his oeuvre. It demonstrates the artist at his very best, from its vibrant yet constrained color palette to its masterfully cropped composition that subtly directs the viewer's gaze.
The work exemplifies the intimism practiced by many of the French Post-Impressionists and Lebasque in particular. The genre is dedicated to intimate views of domestic interiors that feature artfully posed female subjects in natural light. Thanks to his very deliberate compositional cropping, Madame Lebasque et sa fille Marthe feels highly personal and familiar, as though the artist has welcomed us into his home. He allows the viewer access to this intimate moment between mother and daughter; while Madame Lebasque's expression cannot be seen, Marthe gazes at her with a deep sense of devotion and innocence of childhood. Lebasque painted his daughters at various stages of their lives, but it is the childhood portraits such as these that truly express the love and devotion between child and parent.
Lebasque was born in 1865 in Maine-et-Loire and moved to Paris in 1885, where he often visited the atelier of Léon Bonnat. He studied painting at the École des Beaux Arts and fell under the influence of his fellow students Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. Most notably, he was a founding member of the Salon d’Automne in 1903 along with Henri Matisse, the annual exhibition that in 1905 featured the controversial paintings...

Marinette Endormie (Sleeping Marinette)
By Henri Lebasque
Located in New Orleans, LA
Celebrated French artist Henri Lebasque is renowned for his intimate nudes, and this oil on canvas is a particularly lovely example of his mastery over the subject. Entitled Marinette Endormie, the scene is reminiscent of the sensuous odalisques favored by Lebasque's contemporary, Henri Matisse, in both its subject and its colorful palette. Lebasque's model lounges upon a chaise of richly patterned floral fabrics rendered in cool blue and green hues, while his signature airy brushwork lends a dream-like softness to the overall atmosphere. Like Matisse, Lebasque's nudes reveal the artist's experimentation with composition and color, which placed him at the center of the avant-garde Post-Impressionist movement of the early 20th century.
Painted late in his career, Nu Allongé sur le Canapé exhibits the fully developed style of this artistic great. It was composed nearly a decade after Lebasque permanently relocated to the French Riviera in order to take advantage of the region's unparalleled light. Inspired by the beauty that surrounded him, Lebasque's brightened canvases earned him the moniker "painter of joy and light." These qualities are on full display in Marinette Endormie, with both its airy color scheme, as well as Lebasque's bold, energetic brushstrokes. The contrasts of deep mauve and orange tones with soft greens and blues recall the palette favored by his Fauvist contemporaries, Matisse and Manguin.
Questions About Henri Lebasque Art
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024Henri Matisse was famous for his work as a draftsman, sculptor, printmaker and painter. He is especially well known for his use of color. Although classically trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, he quickly abandoned traditional techniques and genres to pioneer a style all his own, marked by quick gestural strokes and fluid contours. Along with fellow painter André Derain, Matisse was the leading proponent of Fauvism, a movement whose name is derived from the French word for "wild beast." Marked by vibrant hues, Fauvist paintings like Matisse's famous 1906 composition Le bonheur de vivre use wild, active brushstrokes and a palette unconstrained by nature.
