Eugène Grasset’s medieval-inspired Art Nouveau poster, commissioned by Sarah Bernhardt to promote her 1894 role as Joan of Arc in Jules Barbier’s Jeanne d'Arc. Grasset portrays Bernhardt in the spirit of her historic role: standing bravely with a flowing flag embellished with fleur-de-lis amidst an onslaught of arrows and spears.
