Henry Scott Furniture

British

Henry Scott was a painter of marines and coastal subjects strongly associated with the Royal Society of Artists. As well as painting lucrative shipping portraits for some of his wealthy clientele, he also executed several works of British and American clippers. The works of Henry Scott have often been confused with those of Montague Dawson. Scott works similarly to that of Dawson and captures a wonderful freshness and feel of immediacy. Scott’s palette is striking, with all surfaces and elements observed, capturing every movement in full flow. His sails are nearly always bellowed with a good stiff breeze which is further emphasized by the spray of the water being wiped across the top of the choppy seas. Particularly notable are his skies which move the subject, helping the canvas to feel alive. In 1970, Scott was commissioned to paint Morning Cloud, which was skippered and owned by the then Prime Minister, The Right Honorable Edward Heath P.C., M.B.E., M.P. Scott exhibited at the Society of Marine Artists, The Royal Exchange, London, The Guildhall, London and the Royal Academy, London. He also exhibited at the St. Malo Museum, France and Madison Square in New York. Henry Scott was honored as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and awarded an honorary Life Member Cape Homers by the International Association of Master Mariners.

19th century seascape oil painting of a ship off the Scottish coast

Richard Ball Spencer British, (1812-1897) The Perthshire off Ailsa Craig Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 22.25 inches x 36.25 inches Size including frame: 31 inches x 45 inches This painting by Richard Ball Spencer is of the Perthshire, a three-masted barque sailing off Ailsa Craig. The Perthshire was built in Dundee in 1874 and was owned by Thomas Law of 123 Hope Street, Glasgow. The red ensign flying on the mizzenmast indicates it was a British merchant or passenger ship. The owner may well have commissioned the painting to commemorate its maiden voyage. Ailsa Craig, pictured to the far left, is a small uninhabited island off the west mainland of Scotland in the outer Firth of Clyde. The island is made up of volcanic rock which was quarried in the past and is now only used as a source of microgranite to make curling stones. The island is known by a number of different names including A' Chreag (the rock) and Creag Alasdair (Alasdair's rock). It was also sometimes referred to in the past as ‘Paddy’s Milestone’ as it marked the halfway of the sea journey Belfast to Glasgow made by Irish Emigrants seeking work. Richard Ball Spencer was born in London’s East End on 11 November, 1812 to John and Elizabeth Ball. His father was a grocer and the family lived at 106 York Road in Mile End. Both Richard and his brother Thomas were given their mother’s maiden name as their middle names. By 1841, he had established himself as a marine painter specialising in ship portraits and was influenced by artists such as Joseph Heard (1799-1859), William John Huggins (1781-1845) and Robert Salmon (c1775-1845). He spent his time travelling to trading ports around the British coast as well as the nearby London docks of Brunswick Wharf and the Isle of...

"Sunset - Far Pacific" Marine Seascape Painting of Clipper Ship by Henry Scott
By Henry Scott
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A vivid work that is immediate and dramatic, the 19th century clipper "South Australian" makes her way through brisk waters with the invisible winds straining her sails while the long cast of sunlight paints a rich hue of burnt yellows, oranges and pinks across the clouds and sails during the final golden hours of the day. Two figures are observed in the helm watching over the waters while in the distance a second clipper is visible through the dense atmosphere hanging over the distant waters. Typical of Scott, the breeze can almost be felt and the swells of the water are so near, the motion helped along by his heavy impasto with intricate brushwork and complex layers of pigments. Note, we may have available in the gallery a fine pair to this painting of Henry Scott's "Sunrise - North Atlantic" depicting the black ball clipper "Harvest Queen" of equal size and in a matched frame. Henry Scott, F.R.S.A (British, 1911-2005) Renowned for his maritime scenes and coastal subjects, Henry Scott's paintings are often compared favorably with those of Montague Dawson. He exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists from 1950...

Seascape Painting "Sunrise - North Atlantic" by Henry Scott 'English, 1911-2005'
By Henry Scott
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The zig-zag of the rising sun striking the edges of clouds and lighting them with brilliant fire is viewed by early risers on the Harvest Queen, these passengers and crew members visible in the distance standing along her decks. Typical of Scott, the breeze can almost be felt and the swells of the water are so near, the motion helped along by his heavy impasto with intricate brushwork and complex layers of pigments. The sails are full and taut with a strong invisible breeze carrying the vessel forward as the water is whipped about the vessel. Darkness from the forward night casts its shadows across the sails, these being lit from behind with a brilliant translucent warmth. In his standard script, the work is signed lower left "Henry Scott". Note, we may have available in the gallery a Fine pair to this painting of Henry Scott's "Sunset - Far Pacific" depicting the clipper "South Australian" of equal size and in a matched frame.
