Hermann Corrodi Art

Italian, 1844-1905
Herman Corrodi was a Swiss Painter. He was the son of Salomon Corrodi. A New York Times obituary indicates that Hermann was born in Zurich, however his grave marker indicates that he was born in Frascati, which is near Rome. Corrodi studied at the Accademia di S. Luca under his father, Salomon Corrodi (1810–1892) and in Paris (1872). He received commissions for history paintings from the British royal family and was acquainted with most of the European royalty of the time, including a friendship with Queen Victoria and travelled widely in the Far East, including Egypt, Syria, Cyprus and Istanbul, which provided the subject for many of his paintings. He is the brother of Arnold Corrodi. Originally a landscape painter in the academic style, much of Hermann's work is also typical of the Orientalism style of the 19th century. In 1893 he was knighted 'Accademico di Merito' by the Accademia di San Luca, where he had been a professor. The father of the Hermann Corrodi came to Rome early in the last century and established himself here as a watercolour painter. Hermann, who has just died, was born In the little town of Frascati, 12 miles from Rome. He inherited the talent of his father, and every encouragement and assistance to the development of his artistic faculties were given him. Like several other Roman artists, he was gifted with eye-memory, certain effects in nature and certain Impressions of subjects and land scapes remained clearly pictured in his min from the age of 6 years, and 20 years afterward he painted what he considered one of his best pictures from an impression received at that early age. Like most other painters, Hermann Corrodi desired to study the works of contemporary painters In other countries. He, with his younger brother Arnold, was sent to Germany ; and they also passed some time with the painter Calame at Geneva. But it was in Paris that they felt themselves most benefited. There they were possessed with a great enthusiasm for the French school, and from this time onward there Is a complete change in their treatment of subjects and mode of work. Hermann became the painter of poetic landscapes. The Mediterranean, with its blue waters and sun-bleached shores, the life and motion and colour of processions in the little cities on religious festivals and views near Rome In the ever-changing, ever-beautiful Campagna, formed the choice subjects of Corrodi's brush.

Dimensions with frame: 28,3 x 37 x 4 cm Signed and titled "C. Carelli Napoli" in the lower right corner. A closely related companion painting by the same artist—depicting a similar view of the Bay of Naples under different atmospheric conditions and of identical dimensions—is also currently available, offering the opportunity to acquire a rare and decorative pair. This charming and atmospheric landscape depicts a lively scene along the Bay of Naples with the majestic Mount Vesuvius rising in the background. The composition captures the vibrant character of southern Italy, where daily life unfolds along the waterfront beneath the iconic volcano. In the foreground, a bustling open-air market is sheltered beneath large canvas awnings supported by wooden poles. Groups of figures gather around tables, creating a sense of activity and local color. Their lively gestures and varied attire animate the scene, suggesting a moment of social exchange and commerce. Beyond the market, the calm waters of the bay reflect the warm tones of the sky. Small fishing boats and rowboats glide across the harbor, guiding the eye toward the distant shoreline where the city of Naples stretches along the coast. Dominating the horizon, Mount Vesuvius releases a delicate plume of smoke, adding both drama and authenticity to this classic Neapolitan view. The artist skillfully balances narrative detail with atmospheric landscape painting. Warm sunlight illuminates the architecture and shoreline, while soft clouds diffuse the sky, enhancing the depth and tranquility of the scene. The painting reflects the tradition of 19th- and early 20th-century Italian veduta and tourist paintings, highly sought after for their romantic depictions of historic Italian landscapes. This evocative work would make a wonderful addition to collections of Italian landscape painting, Grand Tour subjects, or historic views of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. By Oscar Ricciardi

Located in Genève, GE

Dimensions with frame: 34,5 x 46,5 x 5,5 cm Signed "O. Ricciardi" in the lower right corner. This luminous coastal painting presents a tranquil view of Sorrento, depicting a solitary fisherman working from a small wooden boat in calm waters beneath the region’s characteristic sunlit cliffs. The composition captures the serene beauty of the Bay of Naples, where rugged limestone shores meet a glassy sea under a clear Mediterranean sky. Rendered in oil with refined, impressionistic brushwork, the artist conveys both atmosphere and light with remarkable sensitivity. Soft turquoise and sandy tones shimmer across the water’s surface, while delicate reflections enhance the sense of stillness. A distant sailboat glides across the horizon, adding depth and narrative balance to the scene. The sweeping coastline, dotted with vegetation and pale architectural forms, evokes the historic settlements perched along the cliffs of Sorrento. In the foreground, the fisherman provides a human focal point, emphasizing the timeless maritime life of the region. The painting reflects the long tradition of Italian coastal landscape painting, prized for its decorative elegance and tranquil mood. Its harmonious palette and airy composition make it particularly well suited for both traditional and contemporary interiors. 16th Century Adoration of the Shepherds Painting Oil on Copper by Carnevale

By Carnevale Studio

Located in Milan, IT

Domenico Carnevale (Sassuolo, 1524 - Modena, 1579) Adoration of the Shepherds Oil on copper, 42 x 28 cm Frame 54 x 36 cm Expert opinion of Prof. Emilio Negro The painting represents the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Child in the center, next to the Madonna kneeling in prayer and an angel behind her; towards him in the foreground a woman with a child in her arms, a shepherd with a sheep on the right, a bagpiper on the left and various other male and female characters turn to him. The architectures of the background, between which a glimpse of the landscape can be glimpsed, are hidden in the upper part by the clouds, where a "celestial glory" encamps with three flying angels. The painting shows mannerist characters that can be traced back to the second half of the sixteenth century, and can be traced back to an author from the Modena area, with stylistic references to the Bolognese Samacchini (1532 - 1577) and Passerotti (1529 - 1592). More precisely, it can be attributed to Domenico Carnevale (1524-1579), one of the most important masters of the sixteenth century active in the local area. The Carnival was formed in Emilia, his homeland, where he worked for many years. However, his works also show a clear Roman influence, dictated by a long experience in the city, during which he also dedicated himself to the restoration of the Sistine Chapel. Trained in the late-mannerist environment of Modena, he is also linked to the Parmesan Corrorese and Ferrarese Dossesque tradition; Carnival also always maintains a slight archaic sentiment in his work, The main stylistic reference must be identified in a work similar in subject and iconographic setting, coming from the church of the Pio Istituto Orfanelle di San Geminiano di Modena, currently part of the Art Collection of the Province, attributed to the same influence as the Carnival. Another interesting comparison should be identified with A Presentation of Jesus in the Temple...

Landscape Painting of Shepherds with Injured Lamb by Hermann Corrodi circa 1868

Landscape Painting of Shepherds with Injured Lamb by Hermann Corrodi circa 1868

By Hermann Corrodi

Located in Shippensburg, PA

A brilliant genre composition capturing a family of shepherds as they tend to the wounded leg of a young lamb, each member of the family has a role - the father gently holds the lamb on his lap while his youngest son comforts the creature, watching his father intently as he empathizes entirely with the injured creature. The eldest son holds a brown sheep at bay while studying the way his father wraps the leg - he is absorbing the demonstration as his father leans towards him to help him see every aspect of how the leg is being cared for. The middle son is preparing fresh bandages in the pool of water below, but looks to his older brother with perhaps a hint of envy as he is left out of the details of the instruction. The idyllic landscape juxtaposes exceptional story-telling, a very fine example that showcases Corrodi's uncanny ability to blend the genre and the landscape qualities with equal competence. It is luminous and draws the eye in with a complex vortex of foliage encircling the group as a thin ray of light pierces the translucent shadows of the grove to fully illuminate the figures. In the distance are flocks of sheep in the pasture before hills and mountains at the horizon. Typical of his work, the painting is signed lower left "H. Corrodi Roma 68". It is housed in a very fine carved giltwood frame, probably being the first frame for the painting. We are happy to provide price Price results...
