Rare Landscape Painting of Shepherds and Injured Lamb by Hermann Corrodi

About the Item

HERMANN DAVID SALOMON CORRODI Italian, 1844-1905 Bucolic Landscape of Shepherds Caring for an Injured Lamb (1868) Oil on canvas signed lower left "H. Corrodi Roma 68" Item # C104501 A brilliant genre composition capturing a family of shepherds as they tend to the wounded leg of a young lamb, each member of the family has a role - the father gently holds the lamb on his lap while his youngest son comforts the creature, watching his father intently as he empathizes entirely with the injured creature. The eldest son holds a brown sheep at bay while studying the way his father wraps the leg - he is absorbing the demonstration as his father leans towards him to help him see every aspect of how the leg is being cared for. The middle son is preparing fresh bandages in the pool of water below, but looks to his older brother with perhaps a hint of envy as he is left out of the details of the instruction. The idyllic landscape juxtaposes exceptional story-telling, a very fine example that showcases Corrodi's uncanny ability to blend the genre and the landscape qualities with equal competence. It is luminous and draws the eye in with a complex vortex of foliage encircling the group as a thin ray of light pierces the translucent shadows of the grove to fully illuminate the figures. In the distance are flocks of sheep in the pasture before hills and mountains at the horizon. Typical of his work, the painting is signed lower left "H. Corrodi Roma 68". It is housed in a very fine carved giltwood frame, probably being the first frame for the painting. ARTIST Hermann David Salomon Corrodi was born on July 23 of 1844 in Frascati, Italy. Starting in around 1860 he studied under Alexandre Calame in Geneva before formally studying together with his brother Arnold Corrodi at the Academy under their father Salomon Corrodi (Swiss, 1810-1892), an accomplished landscape painter and professor at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. In 1872 he met Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier and Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris, where he spent the year studying while also exhibiting at the Munich International Exhibition. He proceeded to live for a time in London where he was a close follower and guest of Alma Tadema while also becoming a personal friend of Queen Victoria. As such, he was in a position to receive a number of commissions from the Royal family for historical paintings. The following year he was awarded a gold medal at the 1873 Vienna Universal Exhibition. Starting in around 1876 he began to spend his summers in Baden-Baden, Germany where he developed a great following among the Royal houses, selling his "Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem" to Kaiser William II. His first trip to Egypt in 1876/77 proved inspirational to the artist; he then began to travel extensively throughout Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Cyprus, Montenegro and returned regularly to Egypt. These travels feature extensively in his paintings and his reputation began to grow an international following that would include the aristocracy and royal families of France, Spain and Russia in addition to the close relations he maintained with the leading families of Germany and England. His "Storm in the Desert, Egypt" was presented at the Royal Academy in 1881 and he became vice-president of the International Artistic Association 1889-1890 as well as counselor of the Amateurs and Cultori of Fine Arts in 1895. He was knighted in 1893 as an Accademico di Merito by the Accademia di San Luca, where he was a long-time professor, and in 1899 he presented them with a bronze bust of his father. He exhibited Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris as well as numerous exhibitions in London and Rome, where he settled permanently after his father's death in 1892 and continued to live until his death on January 30th of 1905. Measurements: 31" H x 27 3/4" W [canvas]; 39 3/4" H x 36 1/2" W x 2 3/8" D [frame] Condition Report: Very fine condition. Linen wax lining. • Landscape Painting "Shepherd & Flock" by Pieter Gerardus Van Os circa 1821
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Dutch, 1776-1839 Shepherd with Flock in a Pastoral Landscape (1821) Oil on canvas Signed lower left "PG Van Os f 1821" Item # 204GPP23A An extensive and brilliantly detailed scene, this fine woodland pastoral landscape highlights the ability of Pieter Gerardus van Os to manipulate light for dramatic and somewhat ecclesiastical effect. There is a certain other-worldly insinuation in the golden light as it pierces the dense cover of the leaves to highlight the shepherd and his flock as the focal point for the painting. Here we find the young boy entirely at peace on the bank surrounded by long golden grasses with his hat and staff tossed aside while watching the action of the small waterfall on the otherwise tranquil stream. His small dog stands beside him while the sheep graze carelessly, each showing total disregard for the two men and their dog hunting in shadows of the woods behind them. Across the bank a pair of unattended billy goats graze on the trees of the deeply shaded forest floor. There is a harmony and perfect sense of balance in this intricately detailed scene, an effective infusion of the transcendental into a quiet landscape scene. The work is signed lower left in his typical scrawling script "PG [intertwined] Van Os f 1821" and the back of the frame retains an early Christie's label. It is presented in a very fine carved giltwood frame. PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Born in The Hague on October 8th of 1776 into the renowned Van Os family of painters, Pieter would spend his early years studying under his father Jan together with his brother Georgius Johannes Jacobus (Dutch, 1782-1861) in their father's studio. The three men had remarkable careers and would become some of the most influential painters in the Netherlands throughout the first half of the 19th century. Unlike his brother and father, Pieter moved away from still-life paintings and focused his work on rural landscapes of the Dutch countryside. He was self-taught in this pursuit, first as a copyist of the renowned Dutch "Golden Age" painters Karel Dujardin (Dutch, 1626-1678) and Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654) while also being heavily influenced by the landscape work of Jacob van Ruisdael and the allegorical landscapes of Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. From his studio in Amsterdam, Pieter taught such notable pupils as Wouterus Verschuur...

  • German Landscape Painting of Alpine Mountain Waterfall by Guido Hampe
    By Guido Hampe
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
GUIDO HAMPE German, 1839-1902 Alpine Landscape with Waterfall (1881) Oil on canvas signed lower right "G. Hampe '81" Item # 106QJY03C An incredibly powerful Romantic landscape of the Alpine mountains with a waterfall cascading into a valley, the river pouring over the rocks and curving around the bend, flowing past a pair of figures seated on a grassy noll with a transcendant unearthly lighting that creates a focal point of the couple. It is as if the clouds have opened up just to shine light on them, emphasizing the glorious day the man and woman are experiencing on this leisurely hike through nature. Painted by Guido Hampe in 1881, the painting was acquired by Charles S. Shultz, president of the Hoboken Bank in Montclair, New Jersey where it remained in his home until its deaccession from the home in 2021. The home was particularly interesting for its total originality, the interior looking almost identical throughout its entire life to how it appeared at its inception in 1896. Enclosed in the collection of images is a shot of the painting in situ over the living room fireplace as captured by the Montclair Magazine article on the home in 2020. The work is signed in his typical script lower right "G. Hampe / 81". It remains housed in the original and substantial giltwood frame, fully restored and a very powerful presentation. An article on the Charles S. Schultz home can be found by clicking here. Artist Listings & Bibliography: *. E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Vol. VI, Gründ, 2006, p. 1105 Measurements: 32 1/4" H x 42 1/2" W [canvas]; 48 1/2" H x 58 5/8" W x 5 1/4" D [frame] Condition Report: A fine presentation ready to place: frame with minor wear/abrasion/loss; canvas with trace grime in the mountain tops and sky and all-over moderate craquelure. Surface bright and vibrant. Retains the original frame that we have had professionally restored with trace regilding and inpainting, some elements recreated; the restoration has preserved the antique nature of the frame and all restoration has been toned to match the aged aesthetic of the frame. Painting was acquired with its apparently first surface, an incredibly thick grime layer that significantly obscured the image - this was likely due to its placement above the fireplace in the Charles Shultz...
