ALBERTUS VERHOESEN Dutch, 1806-1881 Cattle and Sheep in a Landscape (1852) Oil on panel Signed lower left "A. Verhoesen 1852", ink-stamped verso "32 SPK(?)" "G.A.S. 51" with torn label remnants Item # 204GRK26A A crisp and finely rendered landscape capturing a brown-and-white cow standing beside a resting black-and-white cow as the focal point, a pair of resting sheep to the left while flat plains with hints of a river flowing through them sprawl before the town at the horizon, the paddles of a large windmill piercing the skyline of faint clouds over brilliant blue skies. Executed on panel, it is dated to 1852 and shows notable attention to texture throughout. The hairs of each animal are beautifully articulated, particularly on the standing cow where outstanding attention to detail is exhibited. The work is housed in a pierced giltwood frame with a velour liner, not original but a very nice compliment to the scene. Interestingly one of the prior owners placed a brass plaque on the front attributing this to Albertus Verbuesen despite it clearly being a work by Verhoesen - we have left it in place because it is interesting, but certainly can remove it upon request. Measurements: 8 3/4" H x 11 3/4" W [panel]; 13" H x 16" W x 1 1/2" D [frame] Condition Report: An exquisite presentation. Surface cleaned by our conservator and in pristine condition. Light age appropriate craquelure. Under UV the surface presents mostly clean with a few rather old touch-ups (lower left corner 4 specks, left edge at "village", upper left corner, one speck lower right corner). Frame is not original with minor gilt wear and chipping.
