American Seascape Painting by Hermann Herzog of Fishing Boats

About the Item

HERMANN OTTOMAR HERZOG German/American, 1832-1932 "Fishing Trawlers off the Coast" Oil on canvas signed lower right "H. Herzog" Item # 101BKD28S A vibrant and bright seascape that likely depicts the Belgian coast as fishing trawlers bring in their sails and come ashore from the morning's catch. The seas were a favorite for Herzog and he returned to them repeatedly throughout his career, first with many paintings along the coast of the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium and later with views of the North American coast in Maine and Florida. The present work shows the atmospheric influence of the Dutch masters, the overall palette being of low saturation and creating a sense of drama in the light and sweeping cloud cover. A steamship passes along the horizon while the powerful clouds open up to reveal the beach in the distance with a lighthouse situated at the horizon. The viewer is intimately drawn into the scene as the nearly translucent teal water laps gently on the edge of the sand where a plank has washed ashore, catching the faint rays of sunlight chased through the various layers of clouds and reflecting them back on the viewer chaotically. The work is priced very attractively in light of the restoration that was completed on the painting over the years. Measurements: 20 1/4" H x 27 1/4" W [canvas]; 26 1/8" H x 33 1/8" W [frame] Condition Report: Cleaned and carefully restored by our conservator and sealed in traditional damar varnish; surface presents with slight grime in the lower recesses of the oil that could not be safely removed; relined during the mid-20th century on linen and attached to a new stretcher [likely the same time the painting along the edges was revealed and the hole in the sky was repaired]. Under UV examination: vertical edges with a line of filling and inpainting around the margins from the canvas likely being originally tacked to stretchers that were slightly narrower and the painting was opened up a bit on the new stretchers; inpainting to repaired hole on left side of sky, the brush strokes a bit muddy; scattered inpainting and pin-prick touchups throughout the sky and water, numerous areas of inpainting to and below the rightmost boat. Light craquelure throughout. Frame is a modernn replacement and it does not fit the painting very well, being ever-so-slightly too large around the edges; it does provide a nice clean viewing of the painting until a more appropriate frame can be placed on the painting. • German Landscape Painting of Alpine Mountain Waterfall by Guido Hampe
    By Guido Hampe
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
GUIDO HAMPE German, 1839-1902 Alpine Landscape with Waterfall (1881) Oil on canvas signed lower right "G. Hampe '81" Item # 106QJY03C An incredibly powerful Romantic landscape of the Alpine mountains with a waterfall cascading into a valley, the river pouring over the rocks and curving around the bend, flowing past a pair of figures seated on a grassy noll with a transcendant unearthly lighting that creates a focal point of the couple. It is as if the clouds have opened up just to shine light on them, emphasizing the glorious day the man and woman are experiencing on this leisurely hike through nature. Painted by Guido Hampe in 1881, the painting was acquired by Charles S. Shultz, president of the Hoboken Bank in Montclair, New Jersey where it remained in his home until its deaccession from the home in 2021. The home was particularly interesting for its total originality, the interior looking almost identical throughout its entire life to how it appeared at its inception in 1896. Enclosed in the collection of images is a shot of the painting in situ over the living room fireplace as captured by the Montclair Magazine article on the home in 2020. The work is signed in his typical script lower right "G. Hampe / 81". It remains housed in the original and substantial giltwood frame, fully restored and a very powerful presentation. An article on the Charles S. Schultz home can be found by clicking here. Artist Listings & Bibliography: *. E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, Vol. VI, Gründ, 2006, p. 1105 Measurements: 32 1/4" H x 42 1/2" W [canvas]; 48 1/2" H x 58 5/8" W x 5 1/4" D [frame] Condition Report: A fine presentation ready to place: frame with minor wear/abrasion/loss; canvas with trace grime in the mountain tops and sky and all-over moderate craquelure. Surface bright and vibrant. Retains the original frame that we have had professionally restored with trace regilding and inpainting, some elements recreated; the restoration has preserved the antique nature of the frame and all restoration has been toned to match the aged aesthetic of the frame. Painting was acquired with its apparently first surface, an incredibly thick grime layer that significantly obscured the image - this was likely due to its placement above the fireplace in the Charles Shultz...

  • American Colorist Landscape Painting “Lake Shore” by Frederic M. Grant
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
FREDERIC MILTON GRANT United States, 1886-1959 "Lake Shore" Oil on canvas Signed lower right "Frederic M. Grant", signed and titled "Lake Shore" verso on stretcher bars Item # 109MPK24Q A vibrant landscape that blends the lines of genre work with the impressionist landscape, it captures a pair of woman caught in the middle of a conversation while a young child is exploring the path barefoot. The traditional dress is reminiscent of a century prior and is evocative of a rural Italian landscape, though the stretchers on the reverse of the painting are simply titled "Lake Shore" with no recorded indication of the placement of the scene. The brilliant cobalt blue of the lake is visible to the far right of the nearly square composition while the trees stretch like spires through the horizon and beyond the scope of the canvas, proportionally dwarfing even the cliffs in the distance behind the women. It is a composition familiar to Grant, with his preference for framing subjects with towering local trees, utilizing a relatively square canvas and including just a hint of water. In this particular example, the interplay of light and shadow in the scene is positively brilliant with Grant's palette switching from high-chroma to low-saturation within the span of a single brushstroke. The scene is signed in the lower right in his typical script, "Frederic M. Grant" and is housed in a good quality period correct carved giltwood frame. ARTIST Born in Sibley, Iowa on October 6th of 1886, Frederic Milton Grant studied at the North Dakota State University before heading to the Art Institute of Chicago. There he trained under John Vanderpool, Alphonse Mucha, Frederick Freer...
