Imani Bilal Art

American, b. 1983
Imani Bilal (b. 1983) is a contemporary abstract painter based in Atlanta. Her work is deeply inspired by her Islamic faith. As she explains, “I strive to convey the notion of Tawheed (oneness), the idea of primordial matter, chaos, and calm; of all things sharing a source and being connected to an infinite mound, inclusive of the human experience.” Working with acrylic and resin, Bilal, who has been experimenting with paint since childhood, has since developed a chemistry not taught in schools, a sensibility not learned from artists of the past, but a process of her own. Her first solo show in New York City, Fingerprints of Ruh, curated by Nemo Librizzi, was met with enthusiasm, leading to two exhibitions in Atlanta. Inspired by the Islamic concept of “ruh” or breath/inner soul/spirit, it featured lush palettes and undulant shapes against pure obsidian wash. Bilal often paints while seated on the floor to pour her whole body into the composition, using her hands, found objects, and hand-crafted brushes, to create an array of effects. She blends ink with diluted vinegar and acrylics to develop deeper tones and subtle sheen. Islamic art focuses on the spiritual essence of things rather than their physical qualities, a concept that is at the heart of Bilal’s practice. Bilal admires the graphic artist and sculptor Elizabeth Catlett, Color field painter and lyrical abstractionist Sam Gilliam, and Color Field painter Morris Louis but finds creative insight in everyday people as well. She is captivated by the human capacity to endure struggle. Rooted in a connection to mankind, Bilal says in painting to express herself, she also paints to communicate with others, hoping her work sparks powerful emotion. A devout Muslim, who studies her faith in search of true meaning, Bilal explores Islamic concepts in her work and seeks to challenge how specific subject matters are presented and understood. She has encountered resistance from other Muslims who challenge her explication and unorthodox methods of expression. Rebellious by nature, Bilal says resistance fuels her artistic freedom. She is among a small community of Black Muslim American women who push the avant-garde. A single mother of two, Bilal moved from Washington, DC, to Atlanta in 2019.

"Guided by The Blue Butterfly" Abstract Chandelier Painting Acrylic on Canvas
By Ash Almonte
Located in New York, NY
The Chandelier series for Ash portrays an inner mantra, that light is a fuel in which we all connect, the artist goes on to explain: "We all have a light inside of us and that light is how we connect in some realm; whether it be a mentor, a friend, a stranger, a nurse. It is this innate human connection that brings us together and for me, a chandelier represents the complexity and beauty of this and so the idea of providing this light for one another is what motivates me in this collection." Almonte is constantly developing her aesthetic, further breaking the barriers of how she applies paint onto the canvas by carefully manipulating her dried acrylic pallet. Cutting and reapplying the leftover paint onto new works of art, Almonte creates a refreshing and unique design that gives her work a new dimension and a more 3D-like feel. This piece is painted on thick gallery wrap canvas and is signed lower right and on verso, it comes with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 60 x 48 inches Inspired by vibrance and an optimistic outlook on life, Ash Almonte is recognized for her distinct abstract expressionistic style. She is best known for her series of Chandeliers, Butterflies, and Fashion from the Seventh Avenue Design District. Almonte's award-winning works can be found in private and permanent collections around the world. She is motivated by change, compassion for others, and miraculous phenomena that can impact others for good. Her flair and admiration for fashion and art have been a staple of her life since childhood. As a young girl, she would experiment using anything she could find to make art; from tearing apart bushel baskets at her father’s fruit stand, to tearing out old magazine clippings from her mother's magazine collection; anything and everything around her could potentially be used to create. She would continue to seek out opportunities throughout her young adult years, as her love for fashion grew, allowing her to collaborate with celebrity stylists creating looks for top billboard artists, as well as apparel worn at New York Fashion Week for designers Sherri Hill...
