An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique Victorian English cast sterling silver three piece condiment set in the form of squirrels; an addition to our silver cruets/condiments collection This exceptional and rare antique Victorian English cast sterling silver condiment set consists of a mustard pot and a pair of peppers. The components of this magnificent set have been realistically modelled in the form of squirrels eating nuts. Each substantial piece is ornamented with details reproducing the squirrel's fur and anatomical features. The fine mustard pot is fitted the original hallmarked flush hinged cover, incorporating the rodent's arms and head, and retains the original gilding to the interior; the flush hinge and gilding indicates the high quality of the piece. The decoration to each squirrel pepper incorporates an array of pierced 'pepper' holes to the upper portion. The underside of each pepperette is fitted with a hinged hallmarked push fit cover. The base of each piece bears the retailer's mark 'Jones 41 St James's St & 23 B Des Capucine, Paris'. The magnificent condiment set will have been crafted in the same year, but due to the hallmarking system the mustard pot is struck with the date letter 'C' and the pepperettes bear the date letter 'D'. These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver dish rings have a circular waisted form. The sterling silver body of each dish is embellished with impressive embossed and pierced scrolling foliate and floral decoration. The posterior surface of each piece is ornamented with an embossed scene depicting a man in period attire holding a staff; it can be determined this figure is a shepherd. The body of each piece features a shaped vacant cartouche, flanked with a resting sheep and structure design, all amidst the aforementioned foliate decoration. The flared upper and lower rims of each dish are encompassed with an applied moulded border. These antique dish rings are fitted with a removable clear glass liner.
