Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Peppers (1884)

About the Item

A fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver novelty pepper shakers in the form of champagne bottles; an addition to our silver cruets or condiments collection. These impressive antique Victorian silver peppers, in sterling standard, have a cylindrical shaped form realistically modelled in the form of champagne bottles. The upper tapering portion of each pepper shaker is embellished with a band of frosted gilt ornamentation with a scalloped border to the lower edge, representing the metal foil envelope to the bottle. The lower cylindrical portion and subtly concaved underside of each item is plain and unembellished. Each pepper is fitted with a gilded push fit cover modelled in the form of a foil capped champagne cork embellished with pierced 'pepper' holes subdivided by an integrated wire muselet/wirehood design. Condition These antique Victorian silver peppers are a very good gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each body and cover are all very clear.     A fine and impressive, unusual antique Victorian English sterling silver novelty pepper shaker; an addition to our diverse silverware collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver novelty pepper has a plain ovoid shaped form. The body of the pepper is embellished with impressive chased decoration depicting a cracked egg shell with a boy’s face and hands to the anterior surface and his feet and buttocks to the reverse. The body has pierced 'pepper' holes in a hexagram formation to the upper portion. This pepper retains the original fully hallmarked screw fit weighted base; which when unscrewed provides access to permit the pot to be filled. This novelty pepper is a fine example of its type.
