James Daugherty was born on June 1, 1889, in Asheville. Daugherty grew up in a family that stressed culture. He attended the Corcoran School of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was a student of William Merritt Chase. In 1907, he moved to New York City, where he found work as an illustrator. Attending the Armory Show in 1913, he was inspired by modernist ideas. After 1922, he began painting in the realist style and concentrated on murals. He knew Thomas Hart Benton and integrated that heroic style with bright colors into his work. He worked for a variety of Federal programs, including the Works Progress Administration. Daugherty’s works are in the Whitney Museum of American Art, Smithsonian and many other prestigious institutions. He died on February 21, 1974, Weston.
