Jane Tate Abstract Paintings

American, b. 1930
Jane Tate was born on November 6, 1930. In her younger years, she learned design and metal fabricating from her sister and went on to produce jewelry and furniture for retail as well as display in competitive shows. In 1952 she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in art education and applied art from the University of Texas, Austin. During this time, she worked as an assistant to the painter and education chairman, Kelly Fearing. After graduating, Tate worked with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston both teaching art classes for children as well as lecturing adult docents on art history, painting analysis, and artist biographies. In 1955 she helped found the craft store “Handmakers” in Houston, TX and created various garden sculptures and furniture for over 10 years. In the 1970s, Tate moved to Taos, NM and eventually was tutored by Sterling Ohlinger from 1978 to 1988. During her time in New Mexico, she concentrated on plein-aire landscapes near her studio. In 2006 she moved to Olymia, WA where she still lives. Her work can now be found in many public and private collections around the world. On her process Tate states, “I begin with working visions, dreams, memories, photo images (at rare times), occasional requests from others, and on the spot observations as in “plain-aíre” painting, combinations of the above, plus a life size plan of the picture using same basic design in drawing and / or watercolor; but with no lines in the painting.”

Bert Van Bork "Walpi #4" Original Southwestern Watercolor Hopi Village

Located in Denver, CO

Bert Van Bork (German-American, 1928–2014) Walpi #4, 2001 Watercolor, ink, and charcoal on paper Image: 4¾ × 7 inches Framed: 8½ × 10½ × ½ inches Walpi #4 is an original mixed media watercolor by renowned German-American modernist Bert Van Bork, whose celebrated depictions of the Hopi mesas and pueblos rank among the most distinctive interpretations of the American Southwest. Executed in 2001, this intimate yet visually powerful work captures the timeless beauty of Walpi, the historic Hopi village perched atop First Mesa in northern Arizona. Working in watercolor, ink, and charcoal, Van Bork transforms the village's iconic adobe architecture into an expressive arrangement of luminous blues, warm yellows, vibrant oranges, and brilliant pinks. Loose gestural brushwork and confident linear drawing create a compelling balance between abstraction and representation, conveying not only the physical landscape but also the spiritual atmosphere and enduring cultural significance of Walpi. Throughout his later career, Van Bork returned repeatedly to the Hopi mesas, creating an important series of paintings and works on paper inspired by the region's remarkable architecture, dramatic desert light, and rich Indigenous heritage. His Walpi compositions are especially prized for their fusion of European Expressionism with the visual language of the American Southwest, making them appealing to collectors of Southwestern art, American Modernism, and Expressionist landscape painting. Born in Germany, Van Bork studied under Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, co-founder of the influential German Expressionist movement Die Brücke, before immigrating to the United States in 1954. In addition to his distinguished career as a painter and printmaker, he gained international recognition as a filmmaker, earning an Academy Award nomination for EyeWitness: The Legacy of Death Camp Art...
