Mid Century Don Quixote Portrait Spanish Catalan Expressionist Oil TECHNICAL SHEET Oil on canvas Mid-20th century 55 × 33 cm (21.7 × 13 in) Frame: 58 × 36 cm (22.8 × 14.2 in) Signed lower right Metal frame with matte finish Very good overall condition DESCRIPTION Striking Mid-Century modernist interpretation of Don Quixote by Jaume Muxart, executed in a strong Catalan Neo-Figurative Expressionist language characteristic of Spanish post-war painting. The elongated vertical figure is constructed through palette-knife structure and dense impasto, reducing Cervantes’ legendary knight to a symbolic psychological presence rather than a literal portrait. The helmet-like white head emerging from a deep burgundy background creates a dramatic apparition typical of Muxart’s mature figurative period. The figure represents Don Quixote as an existential literary archetype frequently explored in Spanish modern painting and particularly within the renewal of Catalan modern art associated with artists connected to the Grupo Taüll, one of the key movements in the evolution of post-war avant-garde painting in Barcelona. Compact in scale but visually intense, the painting combines strong decorative presence with the intellectual depth characteristic of Muxart’s Quixote interpretations. ARTIST BIO Jaume Muxart (1922–2019) was a major Catalan painter and founding member of the influential Grupo Taüll, alongside Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart, Josep Guinovart and Joan-Josep Tharrats. After early exhibitions in Barcelona in the late 1940s he travelled to Paris on scholarship, where he encountered the international avant-garde that shaped his expressive language. He later represented Spain at the São Paulo Biennial and exhibited widely across Europe and the Americas. Muxart served as professor and later dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and became a member of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi. His work is held in numerous institutional and private collections. ARTISTIC CONTEXT / INSPIRATION This painting belongs to the expressive Neo-Figurative tradition developed in post-war Spain and Catalonia, where literary archetypes such as Don Quixote became vehicles for psychological and symbolic exploration. Comparable resonances can be found in the structural figuration of Bernard Buffet, the expressive intensity of Antonio Saura, and the material experimentation associated with Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart and Josep Guinovart within the post-war Catalan avant-garde. don quixote painting...

Expressionist Neofigurative Portrait Oil Painting Catalan Taüll Group School Artist: Jaume Muxart Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 61 × 50 cm (24 × 19.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good condition. Stable paint surface with original impasto visible Origin: Spain Period: Mid-20th century DESCRIPTION Expressive neofigurative portrait by Catalan painter Jaume Muxart, a founding member of the influential Taüll Group and a key figure in the renewal of Spanish postwar painting. The composition presents a frontal stylized head structured through bold chromatic contrasts and gestural brushwork. A strong vertical axis divides the face into two emotional registers, creating psychological intensity while reinforcing the structural rhythm of the composition. The interaction between white tonal fields and passages of cobalt blue, magenta and grey reveals the material sensitivity characteristic of Muxart’s mature neofigurative language. The textured surface preserves the physical presence of the brushstroke and reinforces the expressive tension of the figure. Portraits of this type represent one of the most recognizable directions within the artist’s production and reflect the broader evolution of European postwar figurative expression. This work belongs to the Catalan postwar neofigurative movement associated with artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart and Josep Guinovart, with whom Muxart shared the experimental environment of the Taüll Group. Its expressive treatment of the human figure also connects with the wider European postwar tradition developed by Jean Dubuffet and Karel Appel, where gesture and material structure replace descriptive realism. Jaume Muxart (Martorell, 1922 – Barcelona, 2019) was a Catalan painter and founding member of the Taüll Group, alongside Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart and Josep Guinovart, one of the most influential collectives in the renewal of Spanish postwar painting. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and later worked in Paris during the formative years of his career. He represented Spain at the São Paulo Biennial and developed an important international exhibition trajectory. Muxart also served as professor and dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona and remains recognized as a key figure within Catalan neofigurative painting of the twentieth century. Ben Wilson Ozymandias, 1989 Oil on masonite board Boldly signed by Ben Wilson on the back 36 × 48 inches Unframed Provenance: acquired from the Estate of Ben Wilson This work is titled "Ozymandias" after the famous sonnet written by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). Shelley's poem is one of the most poignant meditations on the fleeting nature of human power and the inevitability of decline. The poem serves as a reminder that time erodes even the most imposing empires and leaders and that the pursuit of lasting fame and control is ultimately futile. Depending on how one views Ben Wilson's Abstract Expressionist painting of "Ozymandias" -- some of the imagery might reveal the head of an angry king and a sickle. Shelley's poem Ozymandias reads: I met a traveler from an antique land...
