Still Life in Ochre and Blue, Mid-Century Abstract Expressionist Painting

By Jean Jacques Boimond

Located in Genève, GE

Signed "Boimond" in the lower right corner. The artist approaches the traditional still-life genre with considerable freedom, reducing familiar objects to loosely defined silhouettes and patches of pigment. Dark bottles rise along the left side of the composition, while a cluster of brilliant yellow flowers illuminates the center. Rounded forms suggesting fruit and vessels appear throughout the foreground, alternately emerging from and dissolving into the surrounding painted surface. The composition is distinguished by its sophisticated palette of warm ochre, earthy red, turquoise blue, deep green and luminous yellow. Rather than relying on conventional perspective or precise outlines, the artist constructs the image through color, texture and overlapping forms. The vigorous handling of the paint gives the surface a tactile quality and creates a compelling balance between figuration and abstraction. The work reflects the renewed approach to still-life painting that developed in European post-war art, when recognizable subjects were increasingly transformed through expressive color, simplified form and gestural application of paint. Both energetic and harmonious, this richly colored composition has a strong decorative presence while retaining the intimacy and familiarity of the traditional still life. abstract still life, abstract expressionist painting, Abstract Expressionism, mid-century modern painting, mid-century abstract art, modernist still life, abstracted still life, post-war painting, post-war European art, European modernist painting, European abstract painting, 1950s painting, 1960s painting, 1970s painting, colorful abstract painting, textured painting, expressive still life, gestural painting, painterly abstraction, bottles still life, fruit still life, floral still life, yellow flowers painting...

Yellow Birds and Flowers – J.J. Boimond, Mid-Century Modern Still Life

By Jean Jacques Boimond

Located in Genève, GE

Signed J.J. Boimond lower right. Oil on panel. Dimensions: 59 × 65 cm (23.2 × 25.6 in.) Expressive mid-20th century still life depicting a richly colored interior composition with a bouquet of flowers, a bottle and a cage inhabited by vivid yellow birds. The artist brings together familiar domestic objects within a highly personal and poetic composition. At the center, a bouquet of loosely painted flowers emerges from a blue vase, while the strong vertical presence of a dark red bottle balances the composition on the left. To the right, the cage and its bright yellow birds introduce an unexpected narrative element and immediately draw the eye. Executed with a vigorous, textured handling of paint, the work favors expressive color and atmosphere over precise representation. Warm ochres, earthy browns, pinks and greens are enlivened by flashes of yellow, blue and red, creating a rich and harmonious surface. The deliberately simplified forms and loosely defined perspective contribute to the painting’s distinctly modern character. The work reflects the influence of European Expressionism and post-war figurative painting, combining the traditional genre of the still life with a freer and more emotionally charged approach to color and form. Both intimate and decorative, this unusual composition has a strong visual presence and a particularly appealing sense of warmth and spontaneity. Charming mid-20th-century oil on panel by J.J. Boimond, depicting two bright yellow birds in a cage beside a vase of freshly cut flowers. The artist constructs an intimate and poetic interior scene around a particularly appealing combination of motifs. The vivid yellow birds provide the focal point of the composition, echoed by the yellow flowers arranged in a slender blue vase. Behind them, loosely suggested objects and furnishings dissolve into a richly worked background of warm ochre, terracotta, green and brown tones. The painting is distinguished by its expressive handling of color and its deliberately simplified forms. Rather than pursuing strict realism, Boimond creates atmosphere through broad areas of color, soft contours and a textured, almost velvety paint surface. The juxtaposition of the geometric structure of the birdcage with the freer treatment of the flowers and surrounding interior gives the composition an appealing balance between structure and spontaneity. A highly decorative and evocative example of European mid-century figurative painting, particularly attractive for its unusual combination of still life, interior and bird imagery. Introducing "Scandinavian Winter Landscape, 1907" a mesmerizing painting by the artist Arthur Percy Carlsson, later known as Arthur C:son Percy (1886-1976). Born in Vickleby, Öland, Percy's artistic journey was one defined by unwavering determination and exceptional talent. This landscape painting presents a winter landscape, likely set during the early spring season. The canvas portrays a vast, snow-filled meadow, blanketed in pristine white. Above, the sky comes alive in a captivating pointillist style, with hues of blue, turquoise, and yellow forming delicate, scattered dots, while small clouds grace the horizon. The scene unfolds with an enchanting backdrop of a distant forest, its trees adorned with a touch of winter's charm. Between the enchanting forest and the expansive meadow, a few humble houses...
