Jennifer Moses Art

b. 1959
Jennifer attended Virginia Commonwealth University receiving a Bachelor in Fine Arts. After graduating, she moved to New York City where she began her professional career as an abstract painter in a studio just north of Canal Street. She had the opportunity to be immersed in the city’s art scene and worked part-time as an assistant for contemporary artist, Sandi Slone. In 1994, Jennifer relocated to Ojai, California. The transition facilitated a shift in style and subject matter. She was instantly drawn to her new environment and inspired by the charm of Ojai, the majestic California coastline and western landscape. Jennifer was introduced to the paintings of the Early California Impressionists and thus the exploration into landscape painting began. Although mostly self taught in the plein air tradition, she studied privately with CAC Signature Artist, David Gallup and has attended various workshops with other prominent plein air artists. While Jennifer draws inspiration from nature and creates compositional studies on location, her larger work is refined and painted in her Ojai studio using her studies as a reference. “It is the essence of a place that is at the core of my work. I often find that I am drawn to the intimate aspects of a landscape; a moment in time or a specific feeling that unfolds when I’m quiet. The process for me is a celebration of beauty and the interrelatedness of all things. My greatest desire is to communicate that connection through the visual poetry of painting.” Moses is a Signature Member of the California Art Club. She is also a member of the Ojai Studio Artists, a non-profit arts organization, where she served as president for three years. Her paintings have been exhibited in various galleries and museums including the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Autry Museum of Western Art, USC Fisher Museum of Art, Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, Santa Paula Art Museum, Carnegie Art Museum, Hilbert Museum, USC Pacific Asia Museum, and Carnegie Art Museum. Carlson Reporting Editor, FineArtConnoisseur.com, April, 2014

Untitled (Abstract Expressionist Painting)

By Bertha Davis

Located in Wilton Manors, FL

Bertha G. Davis (1911-1997) Untitled, ca. 1960's Oil on cradled masonite panel. 16 x 20 inches; 24 x 28 inches framed. Signed lower left. Artist estate stamp on verso. Vintage custom wormy chestnut frame. A painter of cityscapes, landscapes, and abstracts in Texas, Bertha G Davis was primarily a self-taught artist whose style was influenced by her early life experiences in pre-World War II Lithuania and later Mexico. Her style is expressionistic*, relying on color to denote her profound feelings. She works primarily in watercolor and acrylic with some mixed media*. She is the daughter of Abraham and Dvora Germaize of Vilna, Lithuania and grew up in Jewish ghettos in Vilna, Alita, and Kovno. Davis was influenced by her father who was a decorative wood-worker and carpenter in Lithuania. The family of five daughters and a son escaped to Mexico City in the late 1920’s because of Jewish oppression. The images and emotions she experienced had no outlet. She was known as a beauty, and at age 17 was named Jewish Miss Mexico, barely able to speak Spanish having just emigrated from Eastern Europe. Irving Davis, a merchant from Texas who had also come from Eastern Europe via Cuba, saw her at this event where she was crowned Jewish Miss Mexico, and three days later asked for her hand in marriage. They moved to a small town in Texas, raising a family. Her daughter, Sylvia, was born when Davis was 20 and they were inseparable. As Sylvia became an actress, painter, and sculptor, Davis was amazed at the capacity for creativity. Davis didn’t begin her own artistic journey until she was 47, when her daughter Sylvia Caplan encouraged her to try. She was inspired by this daughter who gave her a drugstore palette of watercolors, paper and brushes and told her to “just try.” Davis did not put down her palette and brushes until her death in 1997. Bertha G Davis was primarily self-taught but maintained a style oriented toward color and texture that reflected her strong feelings. Most of her early work was done while she lived in McAllen, Texas where she was known for her contribution to art and showed her work and the work of other artists at the Bertha Davis Gallery. She studied with Stewart Van Orden, at Pan American College in 1960-61; and was a student at the Art Institute San Miguel Allende, Mexico, 1965. She was also a student of Harold Phenix...

Antique American Marine Seascape Oil Painting Crashing Surf Atlantic Coast Maine

By Frederick Judd Waugh

Located in Portland, OR

A fine antique seascape oil painting on panel by the celebrated marine artist, Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940), depicting the Atlantic of the coast of Maine, circa 1910. The painting is finely executed with bold and decisive brush strokes with crisp edges, one can almost hear the roar of the ocean as the surf crashes upon the rocks. The painting is signed lower right "Waugh" and is housed in the original carved & gilded frame. Condition is very good indeed, this fine seascape by one of America's most acclaimed late 19th early 20th century marine artists is ready to grace your wall. The painting will be accompanied with a certicificate of authenticity & provenance. Frederick Judd Waugh was an American artist, primarily known as a marine artist. During World War I, he designed ship camouflage for the U.S. Navy, under the direction of Everett L. Warner. Waugh was the son of a well-known Philadelphia portrait painter, Samuel Waugh. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, and at the Académie Julian in Paris with Adolphe-William Bouguereau. After leaving Paris, he moved to England, residing on the island of Sark in the English Channel, where he made his living as a seascape painter. In 1898 he was recorded as living in Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire. In 1908, Waugh returned to the U.S., settling in Montclair Heights, New Jersey. He had no studio until art collector William T. Evans (a railroad financier and President of the dry goods firm, Mills Gibbs Corporation) offered him one in exchange for one painting a year. In later years, he lived on Bailey Island, Maine, and in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Waugh’s marinescapes were highly acclaimed, garnering him the Popular Prize at the Carnegie International Exhibition for five years in a row, a feat accomplished by no other artist. In 1914, he was a judge of the art exhibit on Monhegan Island, Maine during the 1914 Ter-Centenary celebration of the Voyage of Captain John Smith. In addition to his marinescapes, Waugh sometimes published work in periodicals, such as The Green Sheaf, to which he contributed at least one illustration. He also produced paintings and sketches on legendary and mythological themes; see, for instance, his 1921 sketch “Levitation in Dream No. 3”, and his c. 1912 painting “The Knight of the Holy Grail”. In 1918, Waugh was recommended to serve as a camouflage artist (or camoufleur) for the U.S. Navy, as a member of the Design Section of its marine camouflage unit. That section was located in Washington, D.C., and was headed by American painter Everett L. Warner. According to a biography of Waugh, “Many large ships, including the Leviathan, were painted according to his designs. Though the enterprise was of course a team effort in which no man played a solo part, he had every reason to be proud of his record. Only one ship with his system of camouflage was lost during the war”. Waugh was known to produce literary work, publishing a short poem in Pamela Colman Smith’s short-lived periodical The Green Sheaf; a fairy tale in The English Illustrated Magazine; and, in 1916, the book The Clan of Munes...

By Ben Wilson

Located in New York, NY

Ben Wilson Ozymandias, 1989 Oil on masonite board Boldly signed by Ben Wilson on the back 36 × 48 inches Unframed Provenance: acquired from the Estate of Ben Wilson This work is titled "Ozymandias" after the famous sonnet written by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). Shelley's poem is one of the most poignant meditations on the fleeting nature of human power and the inevitability of decline. The poem serves as a reminder that time erodes even the most imposing empires and leaders and that the pursuit of lasting fame and control is ultimately futile. Depending on how one views Ben Wilson's Abstract Expressionist painting of "Ozymandias" -- some of the imagery might reveal the head of an angry king and a sickle. Shelley's poem Ozymandias reads: I met a traveler from an antique land...
