GOULD, John; Elizabeth Gould. Art

Elizabeth was born on July 18th, 1804 in Ramsgate, England to a military family. She likely underwent training in drawing and botany from an early age as was typical of a woman of her class in Victorian England. She met John Gould through her brother, Charles Coxen, who was also a taxidermist. She married John Gould in January 1829, both 24 years old. Gould began her professional work-life by producing ornithological drawings intended to supplement John's ornithological writing in letters to colleagues. John encouraged her to learn lithography and had his collaborator Edward Lear teach her. Once proficient with the art form, she created illustrations from John's more rudimentary drawings. She designed, lithographed and painted more than 650 plates that appeared in A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, The Birds of Europe, A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia and many other texts.

White Eye-browed Partridges: Hand-colored Folio-sized Bird Lithograph by Gould

By John Gould

Located in Alamo, CA

This is a 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Dendrortyx Leucophrys" (White Eye-browed Partridges) by John Gould, published in his monograph 'A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America' in London between 1844-1850. Reportedly only 250 copies were printed. The print depicts two partridges, one standing and the other lying apparently on sand, surrounded by high grass. A landscape of plants and possibly water is seen in the background. This beautiful hand-colored lithograph is presented in a double cream-colored mat. There is one tiny spot in the left lower corner, faint spots in the right upper print and mild toning about the periphery which is covered by the mat. It is otherwise in excellent condition. It is accompanied by the original text page. John Gould (1841-1881) was an English contemporary of the American John James Audubon. Gould published his first illustrated book on birds in 1831 entitled "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains", followed by "Ramphastidae" and "Birds of Europe". He then extended the scope of his travels and research to include Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea, drawing birds in their natural habitat. Artists, such as his wife Elizabeth Gould, Henry Richter and Edward Lear, transferred his drawings to hand printed and hand colored stone lithographs, which are known for their beauty, detail and accuracy. As well as an exceptional and prolific artist, Gould was an outstanding scientific naturalist. In approximately 50 years he created approximately 3,000 lithographs of birds...

"Alpomado Falcon" Hand Colored Bird Lithograph from USPRR Exploration & Survey

Located in Alamo, CA

This striking hand colored stone lithograph of a "Alpomado Falcon" was created by John Cassin (1813-1869) and is Plate 1 in the "USPRR Exploration and Survey Report", published in Washington, DC in 1859. There is an occasional spot, but the lithograph is otherwise in very good condition. The 12 volume report was authorized and funded by the US government to determine the most practicable and economical route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. These explorations and subsequent reports represented the greatest collection of knowledge of the topography and natural history of the Western United States created during the nineteenth century. John Cassin was an ornithologist and illustrator. He was named curator of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences in 1842 and worked with John Bowen...
