Jorge Camacho Mixed Media
Cuban, 1934-2011
Jorge Camacho was among the internationally recognized artists included in the landmark exhibition Ediciones Polígrafa at the Redfern Gallery, held at 20 Cork Street, London, from 4 December 1979 to 31 January 1980. The exhibition presented a distinguished group of artists collaborating with the Barcelona-based publisher Ediciones Polígrafa, emphasizing the importance of printmaking as a key medium within postwar modern and contemporary art.
Camacho, closely associated with Surrealism and later post-surrealist developments, is known for his enigmatic and often dreamlike compositions that explore themes of transformation, mysticism, and the subconscious. His work frequently features hybrid forms, organic structures, and symbolic imagery rendered with a refined yet unsettling precision. In print form, these elements translate into compositions that balance delicate line work with layered tonal depth, reinforcing the psychological and poetic qualities of his visual language.
Within the context of the Polígrafa exhibition, Camacho’s work resonated alongside that of artists such as Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, and Wifredo Lam, highlighting the exhibition’s international scope and its role in advancing modern printmaking practices.
Jorge Camacho lithograph 1979, Ediciones Polígrafa exhibition London, Redfern Gallery Cork Street show, surrealist print composition, symbolic hybrid forms, dreamlike imagery artwork, mystical abstraction print, modernist graphic work, limited edition lithograph portfolio, 1979 London art exhibition
