Jose Castro Photography

Cuban, b. 1947

Jose Castro was born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1947. In 1961, when he was 14, Castro was sent to Miami to escape the Revolution. Later he was joined by his mother and sister in Miami, where he has lived ever since. In 1999, he returned to his native Cuba to visit for the first time since he left. The experience was emotionally transformational. It made him see how his early life there shaped who he is today. Also, as a result, that emotional catharsis allowed him to embrace his past and integrate it peacefully with his present identity. Castro graduated from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. His professional career path took him from architecture to interior design in Miami where he practised in several prominent design firms and ultimately including his own. His fields of practice included commercial, residential, hospitality and cruise ships. Castro now devotes himself fulltime to his art. At present, his approach to painting can be described as experimental and exploratory; it is purely non-representational. In contrast to his more structured design practice, he enjoys the freedom of expression and lack of constraints that painting provides him. He likes to create images that are visually interesting and intriguing. Besides acrylic paint, Castro likes to use a variety of media such as grout, cardboard, packaging materials and other discarded materials to create his multi-layered works.

Many of the depicted scenes were inspired by moments where Fahnestock was astonished by something that was equal parts mesmerizing and distressing. “Seeing my first wildfire in person, or the images of San Francisco covered in an orange haze, all the while recognizing that these things were in fact terrible. They signified disasters and ecological shifts. The increase in wildfire events is due in part to the encroachment of larger, developed communities onto lands that were previously maintained for fire season by natural means or by the Forest Service...

"It was very strange and magical for my dogs to suddenly and instinctively to become an integral part of the landscape. I suppose that’s what hunting dogs do." - David George David George's interest in British landscape began under the tutelage of John Blakemore at Derby University and continues to be a major part of his practice, now mainly concerned with ideas of classical and romantic visual semantics in the contemporary British landscape. His work looks at the decline of traditional industries, incorporating his interest in 19th century European landscape painting...

NO. 7
By Melissa Mizrakli
Located in New York, NY
The photographs of the young Turkish artist Melissa Mizrakli focus on the human body, giving it a personal interpretation. In some of her black and white works she uses the human body only as a pictorial sign in order to create almost abstract works. First made anonymous, the female model is then cloned and circularly multiplied. The result is a kind of wheel in which the repeated human body gives birth to a new, seemingly vegetal or mineral structure. Thus, the human element seems to be transformed into different other natural species...
