Joseph Mittey was born on April 1, 1853 in Vix, and died on June 25, 1936 in Geneva. He was a Swiss painter of French origin.
He exhibited in Paris where he began in 1877 at the Salon of French Artists (then still called the Salon of Painting and Sculpture). He was then active in Geneva and thus participated in the introduction of Impressionism in Switzerland.
Joseph Mittey was called to Geneva at the end of the 1870s to open the drawing class at the brand new School of Industrial Arts. Édouard Ravel joined him there a few years later to teach art history. Later, both work on the decoration of the communal hall of Plainpalais, inaugurated in 1909. In 1879, the class of ceramics opens, teaching to which the holder, Joseph Mittey, does not take long to join the decorative composition, which had first attributed to J. Benoit-Muzy and H. Silvestre, then decorative painting.
Freemason, Joseph Mittey decorates in particular the temple of the Swiss Grand Lodge Alpina and fitted out the temple of the lodge "The Union of Hearts". He was also one of the active decorators in the construction of the pavilions for the National Exhibition held in Geneva in 1896.
Joseph Mittey was the teacher of many students, including Carlos Schwabe, who took his classes from February 1882 to 1884 at the School of Geneva.
On the sidelines of the interior decorations of official buildings, he painted during his career mainly very colorful landscapes (views of countryside and rivers, snowy landscapes, views of Antibes, sunny terraces...), with soft but firm complexions. There are also bouquets and animated scenes. Joseph Mittey devotes himself to oil painting, watercolor and colorized pyrography. He exhibited all over Europe, in major Salons and in prestigious art galleries (Galerie Paul Vallotton in Lausanne, Galerie Rowney in London).
His works are present in a room of the Lancy museum, devoted to regional art and impressionism, at the Winterthur art museum and in many private collections.to

His works are cited for their energy and simplicity, and he often did panoramic views. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1861, with the name of George Gardner Simon, but he changed his last name to Symons when he returned from study in England because of concern about anti-semitism. Not much is known about his early life. He first studied at the Chicago Art Institute where he became a close, life-long friend of William Wendt. They painted together in California and then in Cornwall, England in 1898. He also studied in Paris, and Munich and London, and joining a colony of artists at St. Ives, adopted the plein-air techniques of Julius Olsson, Adrian Stokes, and Rudolph Hellwag. He worked in Chicago as a commercial artist, and about 1903 returned to California with Wendt and built a studio in Laguna Beach and became active in western art societies including the California Art Club.
