Karl Blossfeldt Photography

German, 1865-1932

Karl Blossfeldt was a German photographer, sculptor, teacher and artist who worked in Berlin, Germany. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things, published in 1929 as Urformen der Kunst. Blossfeldt was inspired, as was his father, by nature and how plants grow. He believed that "the plant must be valued as an artistic and architectural structure." Among his students at the Berlin Arts and Crafts School was Heinz Warneke. From 1924, Blossfeldt was a professor at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandete Kunst (United States School for Fine and Applied Art) in Berlin, Germany.

Druridge Bay - Small Black and White Photogravure Print of Concrete Bridge

By David George

Located in London, GB

An urban landscape where manmade structure meets nature, evoking a sense of quiet introspection... Silent and steadfast, the weathered bridge stands against time, blending with nature's embrace... This is a study in geometry, shadows, and time, this piece captures the quiet strength of a forgotten underpass. "David George has been exploring photographic representations of the contemporary British landscapes for forty years and has incorporated themes prevalent in nineteenth century painting practice and aesthetic, to aid this exploration. He has appropriated the sublime, melancholy, the romantic, the pastoral and the uncanny to create something that not only represents the contemporary landscape in a pictorial way, but also making work that can be still viewed as documenting the landscape." David George's interest in British landscape began under the tutelage of John Blakemore at Derby University and continues to be a major part of his practice, now mainly concerned with ideas of classical and romantic visual semantics in the contemporary British landscape. His work looks at the decline of traditional industries, incorporating his interest in 19th century European landscape painting. David George (b.1957, Cheltenham and brought up in County Durham) lives and works in east London and in 2009 he co- founded the Uncertain States project which championed contemporary thinking and practice in UK photography...

An abandoned car rusts quietly by the seaside, a relic of times past... This print captures the serene decay of a vehicle along a tranquil coast. A forgotten car stands as a testament to nature's reclamation. "Coastal Ruin..." "Time's Relic..." "Nature's Claim..." "Automotive Ghost..." "Forgotten Journey..." "End of the Road..." "Lost and Found..." "Remnants by the Sea..." "Rust Reverie..." Blossfeldt was a German photographer whose in depth survey of plants and flowers in photography, transformed how we perceive them. His photography takes delicate plant life and presents them in a form to be appreciated at a whole different level. Often the plant forms or flowers take on an iron like strength and resilient form to be appreciated purely on an artistic level. As we see here, the flower form has a symmetry and solidity and the black and white format is part of what allows us to appreciate it. These vintage photogravures...
