Karl Schmidt, a native of Massachusetts, was known primarily as a California impressionist. He exhibited widely there and his early work had a strong Arts & Crafts influence. As a young artist, Schmidt traveled and studied along the coasts of Cornwall and Brittany and there are echoes of Whistler’s tonal influence evident in much of his work.
