KITTINGER CW-190 Colonial Williamsburg Bombe Chest on Chest
This magnificent KITTINGER CW-190 Bombe Chest on Chest is one of the most exceptional and sought-after reproductions from the Colonial Williamsburg Collection. Dating to approximately 1986, this extraordinary piece was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kittinger's association with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and represents one of the finest achievements of the company's celebrated Williamsburg reproductions.
Only 150 of these meticulously crafted, signed, and numbered chests were produced, making the CW-190 exceptionally rare among Kittinger Colonial Williamsburg reproductions. Each chest was individually hand crafted by a single Kittinger master cabinetmaker, who signed the Williamsburg certificate of authenticity on the left side of the lowest drawer of the upper case. The construction is remarkably intricate, with the chest comprised of 265 individual pieces of fine mahogany and beautifully dovetailed drawer construction. The drawer interiors are crafted in white pine.
The architectural and carved details are outstanding. The dramatic scroll top is crowned with hand-carved finials, while the carved rosettes and shell provide exquisite 18th-century Chippendale ornamentation. The bombe form, gracefully shaped case, and substantial proportions are complemented by striking hand-cast solid brass hardware. The two-piece construction allows the upper and lower cases to be properly proportioned while retaining the impressive presence of the original period example.
The CW-190 is an exacting reproduction of a famous circa 1780 antique made in coastal Massachusetts, probably along Boston's North Shore, and represented in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. Kittinger's interpretation captures the craftsmanship, proportions, carving, hardware, and construction of the original with extraordinary attention to detail.
This Golden Anniversary Chest on Chest is an exceptional example of Kittinger's commitment to traditional cabinetmaking and represents the pinnacle of the company's Colonial Williamsburg reproduction furniture. A remarkable collector's piece with tremendous presence, craftsmanship, and historical significance.
