This expressive oil on canvas by Austrian painter Kurt Conrad Loew (1914–1981), signed K.C. Loew and dated 1950, depicts the countryside around Confignon, near Geneva, Switzerland, with the distinctive silhouette of the Salève rising in the distance. Painted during Loew's years in Geneva, the composition offers an intimate view of the rural landscape that still surrounded the city in the mid-20th century. Seen from a vegetable garden, rows of cultivated plants and their slender supports animate the foreground, leading the eye toward gently rolling fields, scattered houses and groups of trees. Beyond them, the imposing mass of the Salève dominates the horizon. Loew approaches the landscape with a vigorous and highly personal painterly technique. Broad, visible brushstrokes and areas of textured paint simplify the forms of the countryside, while a subtle palette of greens, blue-greys, ochres and touches of pink creates a strong sense of atmosphere and depth. The foreground is particularly lively, with the loosely painted vegetable garden contrasting with the broader, more structured planes of the fields and mountains beyond. Rather than seeking photographic precision, Loew interprets the Geneva countryside through color, rhythm and expressive brushwork, placing the painting within the tradition of European Post-Impressionist and Modernist landscape painting. The reverse retains the artist's original label reading “Kurt Conrad Loew, Artiste-Peintre, 1 Av. Dumas, Genève”, as well as a handwritten annotation referring to Confignon, Genève, 1950, providing valuable documentation of the work's location and date. A particularly appealing testimony to Loew's Swiss period, combining the intimate character of the Geneva countryside with a distinctly modern approach to landscape painting.
