Vintage American Navajo Rug in Storm Pattern in Maroon, Black, Gray, Ivory
Located in Barrington, IL
A striking example of mid-20th century Native American textile artistry, this vintage Navajo rug from the American Southwest features the revered Storm Pattern, a sacred and culturally significant motif within Navajo weaving traditions. Handwoven in wool on a cotton foundation, this flat-weave textile showcases the signature craftsmanship and spiritual symbolism passed down through generations of Navajo artisans. Set against a rich maroon-red ground, two powerful medallions in ivory, gray, and black form a bold visual axis, creating an “eye-dazzler” effect emblematic of the style. The precise geometry and rhythmic symmetry of the design echo the natural harmony and cosmological beliefs central to Navajo culture. Crafted using hand-dyed, natural pigments sourced from the land—such as vegetal, mineral, and sometimes insect-based dyes—this rug embodies a deep connection between material, maker, and environment. Its balanced palette and dynamic composition make it equally suited for display as a wall hanging or as a floor covering in a sophisticated, collector-level interior. Whether appreciated for its cultural significance, decorative power, or artisanal technique, this Navajo Storm Pattern rug is a remarkable and authentic artifact of Indigenous American design. Vintage American Hand Hooked Rug in Block Pattern
Located in Barrington, IL
Vintage American hand hooked area rug in a block pattern circa the early 20th century. The very unique and beautiful design in this vintage folk art hooked rug consists of a 5 x 7 block pattern each containing a different design. The design in this hand hooked rug is unique since the blocks around the perimeter of the rug are in a geometric pattern and the blocks in the center of the rug are in floral pattern. The design is set on a tan color background. The colors in each block are vibrant and make them stand out. Beautiful piece of Americana folk art to be used as a table top display or a wall art. The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique. The use of special design and the brilliant colors makes this truly an artistic piece wonderful to be used as a wall art or displayed on a table. Antique Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity. Vintage American Navajo Rug in Chinle Pattern in Cornmeal, Black, Ivory, Gray
Located in Barrington, IL
This vintage Navajo rug features a beautifully executed Chinle Revival pattern, a regional design style that originated in the 1920s in Chinle, Arizona, near the sacred Canyon de Chelly. Handwoven from native hand-spun wool, this rug exemplifies the elegance and cultural depth of Southwestern textile traditions. The design follows a classic banded Chinle layout, with alternating horizontal stripes in earth-toned hues of cornmeal yellow, soft cream, warm brown, black, gray, and ivory. The repeating geometric motifs are rich with symbolic meaning, reflecting the weaver’s deep connection to the land, heritage, and spirituality. Executed with a flat weave construction, this piece is crafted from wool on a typical cotton foundation, showcasing both strength and subtle refinement. The use of natural organic dyes, sourced from local plants and minerals, lends the rug a muted, harmonious color palette that feels at once grounded and timeless. This rug is a celebration of Navajo weaving heritage, offering both aesthetic beauty and cultural significance. Its balanced design and natural palette make it highly versatile—equally suited to refined rustic interiors or modern minimalist spaces.
